Best Single Player RPG Games of ALL TIME

Many of the best video games ever released were RPGs, many of these single player. This may sound shocking considering the 9 million sales of Modern Warefare 3 that have been sold in just the past few days. But the truth of the matter is that at the heart of gaming remains the RPG – Role Playing Game. Delving into a new, fantastical world is just one of the many things that draw fans in over and over again. There’s much debate on what makes a great RPG. But there are some games that reach the top of the list over and over again – the kind of game that can be replayed again and again, never getting dull, repetitive or outdated. Here are some of the best single player RPG’s ever created.

Elder Scrolls

Instead of choosing a single game from the Elder Scrolls – Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim – I’ve included them here as set. They are all absolutely fantastic RPGs. The open world format allows for exploration and quest completion at the players leisure. Characters are in depth, each with their own story and personality. When playing Elder Scrolls games it truly feels as if you are traversing the world on a great quest, sometimes getting distracted and assisting the needing with a quest of their own. The Elder Scrolls games are typically released for PC, PlayStation and Xbox – the versions of the consols differing based on the year.

Skyrim

Final Fantasy 7

The Final Fantasy games aren’t based on single cohesive universe as the Elder Scrolls are. Final Fantasy 7 is the best of the Final Fantasy games. This is an older game, originally released in 1997. This is a single player, turn based RPG. Turn based games have gone out of vogue in more recent years, only one or two turn-based RPGs having been released. However, this remains a popular gaming type, with players often returning to Final Fantasy 7 not only for the turn-based gameplay but also for another run through of one of the best Japanese RPGs to ever have been released.

Final Fantasy VII

Knights of the Old Republic

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is one of the best single player RPG games ever made by one of the most successful movie franchises that’s ever existed. But it isn’t just the popularity of Star Wars that drew gamers to this 2003 release for PC and Xbox. Knights of the Old Republic features an amazing new storyline with characters, locations and fantastic gameplay.

Knights of the Old Republic

Fallout 3

Fallout 3 is another fantastic single player RPG that has been played for years and remains top of its class. The post-apocalyptic setting is one of the best versions of such that can be found. Character creation is one of the best, and most creatively done, creations systems made to date. All in all, Fallout 3 remains a prime example off all the Western RPG can and should be.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is another game in a long line, the first of which, Deus Ex, was also a fantastic single player RPG. It is an unsure and changing world that you are dropped into. Missions can be completed in a multitude of ways, each of which changes gameplay and storyline. Actions are felt in this game more so than many others, part of which makes it such a fantastic single player RPG.

Chrono Trigger

This is another example of a fantastic RPG that, despite its age, remains loved and played today. Chrono Trigger is a 1995 consol RPG done in the turn-based play style. However, actions in this world are felt just as much, if not more, than in a game such as Deus Ex. Jumping from dimension to dimension leaves the gameplay open, many companions and storylines waiting to be found and explored, making ever play through different, a unique ending every time.

Chrono Trigger

Fable

Fable is another western RPG that has had fans playing continuously even though sequels have been released in following years. This 2004 release features a great story but also a unique alignment system. Actions of the player align you with good or evil, creating interesting scenarios and a new, fun way of interaction with people and solving problems.

Fable

There are many fantastic RPGs for single player available today. Many of the older games, those originally released on consols now obsolete by newer models, can be found in updated, rereleased forms for newer consols, handheld gaming devices and PC editions. If you are looking for some great sing player RPG games this list is a great place to start. Each of these games have many related games in their respective series which expand the universes and can provide many more hours of great, unaltered entertainment as well.

elder scrolls. since ive never given any of the ff, chrono or human revolution a chance and never will they are moot choices. fable is xbox so i could care less. kotr kicked ass back in the day. The Elder Scrolls are the best rpg's ever. as far as every skyrim owner is concerned and fallout new vegas was good fallout 3 was too buggy.

Since when is Human Revolution a RPG? Without a doubt it had rpg elements, but to place it on a best rpg of all time, no chance. Like Exigent mentioned, Planescape: Torment and Baldurs Gate for sure. But, let's not forget the classics. The Ultima series, Wizardry, Bard's Tales and some of my personal favorites, the AD&D Gold Box series.

rpg = role playing game, has nothing to do with dungeons and dragons or doing 2d8 damage. that is what new-age gamers seem to think RPGs are...

Mass Effect 1&2? First game to carry the decisions you made in the first game over to the sequel. It was extremely immersive...

This list is mostly puerile tripe. Fallout 3 is mostly irrelevant compared to its forebears as well as New Vegas, Fable was an astoundingly barbaric disappointment and Final Fantasy VII was trumped by V, VI, and IX. Deus Ex: Human Revolution is too young to really determine its place in the record books. Other than that, Chrono Trigger is fantastic, as is most of The Elder Scrolls (not counting Oblivion, which is horrible). KOTOR is also fantastic I recommend you play the classic Fallout titles, Planescape: Torment, Vampire: The Masquerade: - Bloodlines, Xenogears, and Baldur's Gate before you claim this list is the "best of all time".

Realize that saying things like this only makes you sound like an idiot. If your opinion differs from that of the poster, that is not a problem, but to bluntly and factually discredit the titles included in this list is "astoundingly barbaric" of you. Your beloved classics are great RPGs indeed, but that doesn't make them the best in everyone's eyes, and many people may have never even touched them.

No, he is exactly right. You tryinng to tell him that the games he mentioned aren't objectively better than the games on this list is what makes YOU sound like an idiot. It's not a 'these are popular now because they have good graphics and are in recent memory' list. It says 'The Best Single PLayer RPGs of All Time' and there are at least a dozen games that I can think of that should be on such a list before most of the games the writer chose.
