Things GTA V Should Adapt From Saint's Row: The Third

Two of the hottest gaming franchises today are Grand Theft Auto and Saint's Row. These two open world games have many things in common besides massive followings from gamers everywhere. Both take place in the city during the modern age, unlike many games out there set in fantasy or quasi-historical realms. Both are filled with less than savory heroes and have us going on some quests that may not be for the faint of heart.

Saint's Row: The Third has already been released. Talk of GTA V grows as we inch closer towards a release date. Everywhere people speculate as to what may be, could be, and should be in GTA V. Though Rockstar is definitely still a king in the open world gaming world, GTA V could still take a page or two from Saint’s Row: The Third to improve over GTA IV. Here’s a list of some things that GTA V may want to look at how Saint’s Row did and adapt for their own game.

GTA V

Less Serious – More Fun

Yes, not all of the GTA titles were as serious as Grand Theft Auto IV, but lets face it. No matter how much you may have loved the game, loved the series, or prefer RPGs over action-adventure open world crime titles, there’s still a time and a place for everything. GTA V should take a lesson from Saint’s Row: The Third and go back to it’s previous, more fun, less serious tone. The story may have been good and the game was still great, but fans everywhere would appreciate it if GTA V went the way of Saint’s Row and stayed more fun than dark.

Keeping Its Identity

We’ve all seen this far too often in video games. A great franchise or publishing company tries to do something different, unique, or groundbreaking with its next best title. Most of the time these fall short of the mark, ending up disappointing or confusing. GTA IV, sadly, suffered from this disease. Between running over pedestrians and crashing into anything that was and wasn’t rooted to the ground we heard deep monologues from the protagonist. While they would have been great in another game, these RPG elements felt rather out of place.

Saint's Row, on the other hand, knows exactly what it is and keeps true to that identity throughout. The fun, over the top antics don’t stop or try to be anything that it isn’t. This is something that GTA V should remember. It’s an open world crime game, not a deep, introspective RPG. Go back to the GTA III days and do what you do best – entertain.

Playability

There are an aweful lot of pedestrians that get run over in GTA. It isn’t always because we enjoy running people over or are necessarily going out of our way to run them over. Most of the time it’s just because controlling your car is a tad difficult. However, no one’s thought of making driving any less frustrating in the GTA series. In Saint’s Row, however, nothing feels overwhelmingly difficult or overly frustrating. If you can’t do something it’s your own fault, not because the controls are only geared towards hard core gamers who’ve been playing video games before they could walk. A tiered difficulty in the drivability in the cars may be a good thing. Certainly there needs to be some kind of streamlining of controls and moves that will make overall gameplay smoother and less frustrating.

Make It Special

Overall, there are more ‘Oh man, remember when’ moments in Saint’s Row than in GTA. This is something that GTA V should definitely adapt from our friends over at Saint’s Row: The Third. One of the biggest things that keep players hooked is because awesome things keep happening. In an RPG it may be the amazing storyline. In a racing game it may be the awesome abilities that you can do mid race. But in a game centered around crime, the list is pretty much endless. Everyone remembers the Bank Robbery, but there should be more incentive to keep playing than just one mission. GTA V should have more than just one similar fantastic mission, however, something that Saint’s Row has always done well with.

More Than Just The Main Mission

One of the blessings of having an open world environment is that you can spend an entire game playing and never touch the main quest line. Saint’s Row knows and embraces this. While GTA does to an extent, it could utilize the benefits of open world gaming much more. In GTA V we want to see more amazing missions, more heists, more bank robberies and anything else they can possibly come up with. Surprise us. Entertain us. Give us more reasons to keep coming back to GTA V. Give us a reason explore outside of getting lost or having to go to a certain area because we must for the main quest.

GTA V is set to be another amazing game in a franchise that has proven itself time and time again. But even great things can stand for a little improvement and tweaking now and again. Saint’s Row: The Third provides great examples of what is possible time and time again. If only GTA V would adapt some things from Saint’s Row it could push GTA V from great to fantastic.

i do not like this article saints row are the over the top open world and gta is more life like and serious which makes it fun anyway, and then it says that driving is tad difficult on gta, it really isn't hard to stay on the roads. you can see that this person who wrote this is incredibly bias toward saint row. look at the facts gta are the kings of open world games saints row are always playing catch up, gta should stay serious and have a realistic story line unlike sr3 all i want to see is more of character customization like more clothes and tattoo's like gta san andreas because ever though gta 4 was amazing and 10/10 i got feed up of just wearing a suit because of the other clothes looked dreadful! lol

GTA V needs good online multiplayer (Steam) with VAC. if it can be as good as SA-MP it will be awesome.. better hopefully. 50+ player online, online missions.. free roam etc.. and GTA san andreas was much more fun than IV, almost at times like saints row crazy.

GTA IV has the mixture of serious and humor. Its as simple as a woman screaming something or a billboard or radio station. At the same time its realistic sense of serious when you play the stories of GTA IV and its Add-Ons.

I'm sure Rockstar consists of masters of the gaming industry. Name ONE Rockstar game that disappointed. I grew up with Rockstar games. From Max Payne and GTA III to now. While I was a child, the GTA series were childish. I'm now an adult and I expect a more 'Hollywood' style game. Don't do what Fable did to itself. It went from being a fun and serious RPG to a child's game. If they took out the sex scenes and blood, it'd be rated C for children.

I have read through some of the other comments and it seems there is a diverse range of tastes and thought provoking ideas. However the author appears to have their very own bias of what open-world games should be like and how people should interact with these types of open-world games. Which is highly flawed in the fact that he has the mind of 8 year old without the capabilities of recognizing the difference between a game that has taken the bold action of walking into a zone that would likely fall under scrutiny but however be rich enough for gamers to enjoy and become a brilliant game by its environment alone; not to mention the clever and very beautiful storyline and awesome game mechanics implemented to deliver a fully epic game and a game that is quick and cheap and simple enough for the massess to easily enjoy. (Don't get me wrong I enjoy the Saints Row games very much, but it would be a sad day to see Grand Theft Auto head into that direction. (games like GTA: SA and Vice city while more relaxed and more insane still felt like they had a strong and well thought out stroyline and a well crafted world more so than the SR series)). Just my own opinion.

I disagree with almost everything that was recommended. I hate the comedic element of SR3. The vehicles are shitty too. GTA V will be great. Rockstar puts out great material. Personally I'd like to see more content for Adults only. Seriously there is a whole market for mature content games. SR3 is what San Andreas and Vice City had to be because of the times. GTA 4 definitely had its flaws. But even a masterpiece will be picked apart after awhile. I hope that the new release will offer more of a customizable RPG element like San Andreas as far as shooting accuracy and driving ability. SR3 is a GTA parody at best.

I enjoyed Saints Row because it was open world and of a similar format to GTA. I liked things like being able to throw people and the silly insurance fraud missions, flaming 4 wheeler missions, etc. But GTA is a different animal. I like it for different reasons and similar ones also. Let them be separate.

Saints Row is like a Michael Bay film. Fast, aggressive, in your face, and over the top. They're made strictly for fun and enjoyment. In contrast, GTA is like a Scorsese film. Thought out, well written. Beautifully executed all around, with an almost pedantic attention to detail. Sure, I don't personally enjoy Saints Row, but I see the appeal. Just don't get your Michael Bay in my Scorsese. If you like Saints Row, good. There's a game called "Saints Row" you'll enjoy. If you want something masterful, there's a beauty called GTA.

The author of this article is a know it all pussy. The problem is they don't know what they are talking about. I haven't played saints row but I don't have to to know that there are people that prefer SR, people who prefer GTA and the neutral people. For the people who prefer GTA this article is invalid and how dare you criticize GTA IV and give your lame as 12 cents and put some shit in rockstars head to try to get them to make these " oh so wonderful adjustments" and have the people who prefer GTA waiting another year jackass. Luckily rockstar is too smart to believe this mess and has us to back it up.This is OUR game not fucking saints row wanna be game, saints row came from GTA as some stated. Driving is fine but characters script is suppose to be exactly how they make it as serious as they want. As for the realism.....best part of GTA. I was actually hoping they had a separate extra real mode like more repercussions when you die like...loose all your money or actually looting bodies like RDR one of my favorite things to do in GTA was to start with no money and a knife and just loot money, guns, and bullets until I die. I would love a zombie cheat I wouldn't mind a cartoon/silly cheat "emulating" saints row. Just don't bring any of that shit into the story line. Part of me lives for GTA and if it were less serious, I might be more serious in real life because GTA is were I can loose myself and be the badass I restrain myself from being in the real world.

Saints Row is like a very, very poor version of GTA San Andreas... I would rather play San Andreas still and that's a 7 year old game. GTA 5 will be a huge disappointment if Rockstar were to take anything from this article.

saints row is awful i bought it on the 15th of dec. and took it back on the 17th because i thought it was going to be great like GTA but was overly disappointed. GTA controls are not hard - i am not a gamer at ALL. I brought my xbox360 so i could play gta games and the first day i brought my xbox i played gta4 and i got the hang of everything very quickly (never played xbox before in my life!)

Saints Row 3 is without a doubt the worst piece of crap I have ever played. I own Duke Nukem Forever so this is saying a lot. You can't compare these two games. Aside from both being open world games, they have nothing else in common. SR is for juveniles. It's sub-sophomoric. The driving is horrible and limited. You can't go over sixty and I don't get the impression they put any reality into it. There is no reality in the game for that matter. If you don't know how to play games and just want one big cheat then fine go with SR. IF you love gaming and your IQ surpasses that of a bag of hammers, get GTA! SR is so incredibly terrible. I can't even begin to express how upset I would be if my GTA was anything like that game.

I dont really get the whole driving thing i think its just fine lol the helicopters are easy tou use, the motorcycles and also the cars lol maybe its just that i played all the gtas that came in the PS2 cuz i dont see it hard to use at all. Try changing the control scheme to classic its a lot easier i think to use the x button or A button to drive cuz im used to that cuz like i said i used to play gta 3 gta VC gta Sa gtaLBS gta VCS. Also can people tell me whats the big deal with kids playing this games cuz i Started playing gta when i was 5 and thats when gta 3 came out i never thought of doing something bad that i got from gta cuz its a video game a fantasy world. Maybe its not the kid's fault maybe its the parent's fault cuz just like i said i never thought of doing something bad that i got the idea from gta cuz ever since i started playing it my family always tells me that its fake so maybe its just how much your parent cares about you

You guys are freaking kidding me, right? In what way is GTA better than SR? There is no excitement in GTA! You have no freedom! If you want freedom, play SR 3 and fly in a jet, make someone explode with apoca-fists, or whack some zombies with giant purple dildos. I play SR 3 almost everyday for at least 2 or 3 hours. GTA i never once did and that is cause there is no excitement and no freedom. You can't even make your own character!

The last fun gta game was san andreas. period hell ever since san andreas i've played 2 minutes of rockstar games "stories" then killing spree. gta 4 wasn't just plain and boring it was depressing. 100% of the time anybody spent in gta4 was killing spree's since the story is about as long as mw3 campaign 5 hours.

I think the GTA series is better than Saints Row. But I missed the days where we can do whatever we want and not do much of the story line. I want GTA V to be like the old days where we could be more free. We should though be able to go in any building and be more destructive. Also let us customize our character more. Other than those, GTA kicks Saints ass any day.

You can't be serious? In what way is gta the same as SR? The fact that the game being serious is what made it fun. Not only did GTA V add a whole lot of new stuff like jet skies! and fighter jets and there may be tanks in it too. On top of all that they are going to have a really good storyline like in every ohter gta game. Plus they have animal in the game fuck what do they really need to copy from SR seriously... fUN! shit GTA IV is more fun than SR imagin what GTA V is going to be like. GTA V is so good that if hey canclled the game i would stop playing video games thats how much better GTA V is going to be than SR 3 and 4 and 5. SR wish they could do what Rockstar could. Personally i think that saints row 4 should take a page from gta iv because not once in SR3 did i feel any connection with any characters, not once did i fully understand or get into the story, and not once did i play for like 6 hours because i was on the edge of my seat the whole time. it may be different for others, but i dont want gta v to be constant stupid fun and ridiculous. i wouldnt respect rockstar for doing that. what i want is to remember the city like i was actually there and remember the music and the missions in years to come. with this i think gta iv was easily as good as san andreas. basically i completely disagree with this article. rockstar may aswell just make saints row or something.

GTA hasn't gotten to where it is now by taking tips from other games. They are innovators. While Volition rode on the coattails of San Andreas and pretty much made a more over-the-top version by just tossing in any random idea they could think of, R* actually went in a whole new direction which I loved. One thing I agree with is more side missions and tasks not involved with the main storyline, but putting more of that isn't adapting from Saint's Row, it's taking from R*'s older GTAs. So what I'm saying is R* doesn't need to take ANYTHING from Saint's Row. saint's row is the one taking from GTA III era games. R* knows what they're doing. I know this sounds cliche, but why don't you just stick to Saint's Row since it seems like you don't appreciate any of the unique aspects in GTA IV that sets it apart from SR.

I know what GTA V should adapt from Saints Row: The Third. The answer is, "NOTHING!" Grand Theft Auto is fine on its own and have been for 15 years. People are in a fabricated panic over GTA going into a "too serious" direction. Rockstar never does the same thing twice with their Grand Theft Auto series. Each GTA game has been unique in its own way and just because IV (still an epic game) was darker than the others does NOT mean V will be the same. V will be heading into a new direction in its own. GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, IV are all NOTHING like each other. GTA V will fit in this same vein.

Driving is difficult in GTA IV?! I'll admit it is a bit different then the III era driving but it is not frustrating. I remember a friend telling me to play sr2. I hop in a car and then I was like "WTF?!" The handling sucked you could not see the difference between driving a huge bus and a super car! In GTA IV its really easy to know the difference! Cars in SR have almost the same aceleration which in my opinion, its just fun for 7 year olds. I tried playing SR3 but it was really bad! I hope the GTA series doesnt.turn like SR. After all why should they? GTA IV sold the most copies of any of their games and receaved grear reviews!

This post is the complete opposite to how I feel. GTA IV missed out on some things it shouldn't of yes. I want it to have some over the top fun it used to have but I definitely do NOT want the brilliant story taken! I've completed GTA IV almost 15 times and the connection I feel between me and the characters is still outstandingly great. I was looking forward to the most recent outing with the Saints more than anything but the game fell flat on its arse for me. There are some missions where the over the top fun and silly jokes are great, but the rest make me feel like a child. I don't want childish taunts and farts in a jar. I want a perfect mix of ott fun and brilliant story. I fell completely disconnected from the characters in Saints row 3. My biggest let down of the year. I want a brilliant story, with customization and realistic but ott fun and some nice graphics on the side in GTA V. I want it to be like a good looking san andreas with the player to character connection I got in IV. If GTA took a leaf from SR's book I would give up on video games for good! Let SR handle the silly, stupid, guilty pleasure unreal fun and GTA handle the rest. Two completely different franchises now.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA i really can't take this seriously. It sounds like this kid just wants another saints row. "there needs to be some kind of streamlining of controls and moves that will make overall gameplay smoother"? are you serious? One of the main things that grab me about GTA games is it's over simplicity in the approach to controls creating something challenging and complicated resulting in great satisfaction when you accomplish the smallest task. Jack knifing a car to shoot cops behind you in GTA 4 was one of the best examples of self/manually controlled unique actions resulting in great satisfaction funny how you mention it needs more "‘Oh man, remember when’ moments" when i've played and beat all three saints row games and barely remember any of it as it was all the same mindless havok. GTA slows things down and really works on their AI/Physics to create "oh man moments" dynamically during gameplay hints why they added Euphoria, I've had hundreds in GTA 4 and countless millions in GTA SA. Less serious more fun? NO! since GTA 3 gta has really made a name for itself by implementing a perfect balance of Parody adult humor and engaging story, when it goes far it does so tastefully and rarely to make it that much more sweeter. I'm sure GTA would have lost the respect of a HUGE mass of it's fanbase if it had you beating people with 4ft purple and middle grade school level dirty taunts. But the part that's dumb about ALL of this is GTA already did all of these things earlier in the series, and Saints row was built around those aspects of the old and exaggerating it into something new. so if anything it would taking notes from itself

yeah gta4 was BORING AS F**K. and since there aren't actually children or schools in steelport 90% of your comment is bullshit. ironically people thought it was going to be silly as f**k but the game is only as immature as the person plays it. i played through srtt got to customize my mc my mc's cars and gang headquarters, you know because immersion is an important part og gaming that gta has been lacking since andreas. the story was dark and serious most the way through and different choices actually effected the game. gta4 end choice between bitch gf or useful yet annoying cousin both had nothing good it was a shitty story with shitty unrelateable characters. srtt ending an all out f**king was with 3 choices the silly as f**k ending the epic serious action ending or both for the extra gear. it out gta's gta was about how they balanced out silly and serious and enabled you to improve your character. lcs dlc sucks ass aswell since rockstar games clearly missed the "player immersion is vital" meeting.
