According to a report from Digital Foundry, Sony’s Mark Cerny is already discussing with several developers in order to understand what their need would be for a next-generation PlayStation console.

In its report, Digital Foundry claims that, for few different reasons, PlayStation 5 might be not released before the end of 2019 or even further into 2020, which is apparently a more realistic launch window considering both the PS4 Pro and the lineup of upcoming exclusive titles.

PlayStation 5: Mark Cerny Already In Discussion With Devs

“What we do know is that Mark Cerny has once again been hitting the road, talking to developers about their needs for the next-gen PlayStation,” Digital Foundry claims in its most recent analysis of the rumor claiming it could drop in time for 2018 (with the source being SemiAccurate).

Mark Cerny was the lead architect on PlayStation 4, and looking at how successful was and still is the console it’s great to see he had his role confirmed for the upcoming gen. Also, this gives the idea that Sony will keep following the path of using PC-like components rather than proprietary solutions for PS5.

As we have already reported, Digital Foundry stated that “a PlayStation 5 due this year simply isn’t viable if we’re looking for any kind of generational leap. And clearly, the current generation still has much to offer – and practically, it’s the time period where both Sony and Microsoft will make some serious money. (…)

Q4 2019 is our first viable target for a proper generational leap in console power, but the price of that leap in technology looks daunting. (…) But a relatively large 7nm processor with an Xbox One X-level cooling solution paired with a big upgrade in RAM and some kind of solid-state storage solution? That’s a whole new level of expense – and financial viability more than any other factor may well push the arrival of a next-gen PlayStation or Xbox back to 2020.”

We’ll most probably take 2020’s predictions for good, with all these factors currently being in place. There’s definitely no need to rush, with all those great games finally on their ways.
