Carmack: Developing RAGE for consoles was a big mistake

id Software founder and programming legend John Carmack has just given a bold statement that may not pleased consoles gamers. He said, "one of the larger mistakes" he made with RAGE was allowing consoles to have an equal place in development alongside the PC.

In an interview to PC Gamer, John Carmack said, "When we started on the game six years ago, I looked at the consoles and said ‘These are as good as the PCs that we're on here’, and our development strategy was set up such that we basically developed live on all the platforms there. And now when we’re looking at PCs that have ten times the horsepower of the consoles... I’m making a large change in my direction, just saying ‘We should be focusing on building things efficiently on the PC and [then] deploying on to consoles.’ And we didn’t make that as crisp of a distinction as we should have."

Carmack further explain how that will change going forward, "My development system now has twenty-four threads and twenty-four gigs of memory, and we can start putting on half a terabyte of solid state drives, and these are the things that are gonna drive the development process on the PC. So, I’m actually as excited about how we’re developing tht titles in this coming generation as the graphics enhancements and things that I’m gonna make."

OpenGL is what did ID software in. It made them big back in the 90's, but its their demise in 2011. OpenGL sucks balls and feels rusty and awkward.

I'm extremely dissapointed with the PC version of Rage. I have been a faithful fan to ID software's previous games and I still have fond memories of playing the 1st Doom game. Whatever the reason is for the terrible graphical problems, it really makes me sad to see an ID game in this state.

This bellow is a paste i put on another thread. I felt it appropriate for this thread too! rock on! p.s. john carmack said it above, but do you see the refunds from him or his bandits? NO! thus, the below statement rules still true! Its still a broken product, a big time warranty job, what are you going to do about it john, as a patch is not going to fix this complete disaster. This is an abysmal game experience. No open world experience - sorry you cant go that way, sorry your blocked from going that way, no, only that way is allowed. Your got to be kidding. Someone can sue them on these grounds alone as it was hyped up. Its hyped as open world big time. Please someone with money - sue them. Terrible people interactions - like a 1980s game. Its just boring. The hope it may get better is the only way people with "no" brains keep playing it. Keeps people into the game, not the game being good, for those who can play it, which is almost no one - bugs everywhere! And yes, i havent even mentioned the bugs. We are Completely crapped on. People wouldnt get so angry if this wasnt such a rip off. The hype for the game has kicked everyone in the teeth and john carmick will never be trusted again. And yes, it "IS" his fault! Everyone has a say in this project, and "he" let it be released like this. That's Rubbish! I demanded my money back and got it, and i hope everyone else does too. I'm only here complaining about the bugs, unplayable! But really, come on. You lied to us. Other products would be withdrawn! Refunds would be given. If my new LCD TV had smoke coming out of it when i just brought it: A/ should i personally take the back off and start playing with the electronics, would that be seen as an issue by the makers or the shop?? HUH! Will, what the ^%#@$. Why do we have to do anything at all to "adjust" / "fix" this broken product. This is bullshit. A completely broken product. Its not fixed until "ALL" the issues are fixed. Thus, the first patch will not do this at all. This is a warranty job, everyone get your money back "now"! There's no hope with this game, you will be disappointed big time. Far better games coming out in a few weeks, wait and enjoy.

Hurr de durp, this game is not what I wanted so it's false advertising thus I can sue them. Get the fuck out of here, your aberrant intelligence is shining through with stupid statements like that.

I know ctrl is toggle crouch and c is go to crouch by default. Just look at the key bindings. You can change key bindings and as far as I can tell.

oh really? i dont buy it. you cant tell me carmack didnt see pcs leaving consoles in the dust performance wise. they wanted to make more moneys and thats why they chose consoles first. who can blame them? look at the fanbase the consoles are having. a pc is just too complicated for the average playstation/360 kid. i just wish they would have given the pc guys the options they are used to from id games. i dont even care so much about grafics all i want is to be able to change the mouse sensitivity and bind the keys the way i like. oh, and if i were able to disable toggle crouch that would be nice as well. if anyone knows a solution to the crouch and the sensitivity thingy, id be grateful. (m_sensitivity is changeable but does nothing)
