1: Lacks Story Mode

One of the first rumors which have been around for a while now is that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is lacking a story mode. According to multiple reliable sources, as the reveal date approached faster and faster, it became evident that the development of the single-player campaign wouldn’t be completed in time.

One source said Treyarch has since focused on expanding multiplayer and the series’ popular Zombies mode. The sources described an emphasis on cooperative modes as a potential stand-in for the typical single-player campaign experience.

The tagline for Black Ops 4 is “forget what you know,” which is a clear hint to the mind control theme pretty dear to the Call of Duty sub-series. Anyway, it could even seem a sort of message to the older fans of the franchise, suggesting that the scheme consisting of campaign plus multiplayer could be gone.

2: Features Battle Royale (+ Switch version)

Another interesting rumor is that Raven Software has been tasked with the creation of a battle royale mode for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. The development team based in California hasn’t apparently managed to achieve the magic number of one hundred players in the same battle royale session.

Anyway, sources claim they’re still hard at work to do it in time for launch, so a Fortnite or PUBG style battle royale hasn’t been ruled out yet. Building on the original rumor, the battle royale mode for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 leak has been enriched during the last few days.

New sources claim the mode is being worked on as a standalone game | to be featured in a particular bundle complete with Call of Duty Battle Royale, a title which has yet to be confirmed, and the regular story mode-less Black Ops 4 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. This way, Activision would even be ready to ship the standalone game on Nintendo Switch.

This release would be coming on October 12, 2018, same day as Black Ops 4, but wouldn’t have any connection to the main game nor series.

3: Overwatch Similarities

Treyarch has been playtesting Black Ops 4 for a while now, and from those playtest sessions are slipping lots of supposed leaks. One of these leaks says that, at a certain point in the development process, the game was going to take the “hero” or “specialist” system from Black Ops 3 and take it to the next level. Perks were completely removed and had instead been morphed into a strange kind of Kill Streak.

Normal Killstreaks as we know them, for example, harrier jets or chopper gunners, didn’t exist in this version of Black Ops 4. Instead, you got highly powerful perks. One of which was a Movement Alteration, that changed your movement from Boots on The Ground to something very strongly resembling Black Ops 3’s advanced movement systems.

Playtesters were highly disappointed at this, which they claim to be an “unfair portrayal of Call of Duty, and something that wouldn’t resonate with fans in the slightest.” So, as of the last playtests, things were changing a lot, actual Killstreaks were being entered into the game and the hero systems were being scaled back a little bit.

4: Specialists and Killstreaks / Grappling Hook / Wall Running

After the rework mentioned before, the game is seeing a return of the Specialists as they were introduced in Black Ops III. The Specialists have killstreaks linked to each of them, with medikits and instakills, and Advanced Movement is an option you can add onto your loadout in the pre-match menu.

As in Rainbow Six Siege, the rumor says that only two players will be allowed to select the same Specialist in a match. Everyone in the game is required to play a specific role and, this way, Treyarch, hopes to make the matches more tactical.

Every character is said to be featuring a default tac slot and lethal filled with a medkit and the lethal with a sat com type equipment that only worked in the general vicinity. The developer is reportedly retaining Black Ops III’s Specialists and wall running, adding features like the grappling hook from Advanced Warfare and basing all of this on the movement system from Black Ops II.

The latter was a little slower in comparison with its direct sequel, and that could be what Activision labeled “boots on the ground” gameplay, although it’s clearly different from WWII.

5: First Two Maps And Weapons

Based on the latest playtests, Treyarch is working to make Black Ops 4 more social, and apparently, you will be at a disadvantage if you don’t gear up properly. The maps were reportedly modern, although the test only lets early users play two maps: one was a destroyed city with a church and tanks inside and outside it.

The other map was similar to Gauntlet from Black Ops III with three different sections. There are a beach, ruins and a bridge. The bridge had two vantage points on either side. As for the exploration of the maps, the movement was said to be fluid and smooth. Climbing over obstacles and windows was seamless.

As for the weapons, there were some that resembled guns from other Call of Duty games as well. Also, some guns are said to feel like the Vesper, Weevil, Chicom, and Sheiva, but they all looked more futuristic. For the secondary slot, you could either equip a handgun, launcher or shotgun.

Apparently, there were no energy weapons, so the game’s going to be futuristic but not as much as Infinite Warfare was.
