TL;DR Games - Best Campaign of 2017 - Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus
Strictly story-based games have taken a bit of a backseat in recent years. These days, it’s all about the online component and finding ways to milk players for every dime that you can for as long as you can. But, we shouldn’t be so quick to forget that single-player games are often some of the best experiences we have. Just look at the list of nominees for the TL;DR Games Best Campaign of the Year award and you’ll see that all are what you would consider elite.
Best Campaign of the Year Nominees
There were some incredible stories told through single-player games this year. Each of our nominees could have won the award and I don’t think it would have shocked many people. Each one created worlds and characters that you could get lost in, and picking one as a winner almost feels as if you’re letting the others down because there just aren’t any losers in this group.
Best Campaign of the Year – Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus
Bethesda isn’t new to creating single-player games that tell stories. In fact, two of the five nominees in this category were published by Bethesda, but to me Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus won best campaign for reasons that the other nominees didn’t touch on.
With Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, you not only get an A+ story under any circumstances, you get one that is relevant with the current political climate in America. We saw a lot of talk about Nazis in 2017, and we saw the unwillingness of Trump to flip them the bird and tell them to sod off. Enter MachineGames and Bethesda, who spent almost every minute of a 10 or so hour campaign making it crystal clear that Nazis are not to be tolerated. They will find no shelter so long as Blazkowicz breathes.
Relevance alone won’t win you awards, but Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is so much more than that. It will break your heart, shock you, and motivate you to destroy your enemies in the first 20 minutes, and then it will continue to alternate between those three throughout the entire campaign in what is one of the most beautifully written and directed games I’ve ever played.
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus also benefits from having a clear purpose at all times, and doing a superb job of creating unique and memorable characters. I always knew what my goal was and believed that it was essential to get a favorable outcome. And the characters that I met along the way were never hard to remember or identify. Each one was masterfully played, and each one felt alive and worth fighting for. I can’t remember the last time a game pulled that off from start to finish, but this one did.
When you add it all together you start to get a sense of why Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus won the TL;DR Games award for Best Campaign of 2017. It was relevant. It took you on a wild ride that always kept you on your toes, but didn’t burn you out. The writing, directing and voice acting was of a quality that most films fall short of, and this helped the characters come alive earn your attention, not demand it. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus was a story masterpiece, and deserving of the Best Campaign of 2017 award from TL;DR Games.
