Audio is king. Whether you’re enjoying the beautiful background music in Civilization VI, or the haunting sounds of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, consuming game audio at the highest possible quality can be a challenge. Long gone are the days of surround sound speakers systems that fill your entire house with gun fire and explosions. Most gamers now use headsets, not only because they’re less disruptive to others, but also because we’ve all grown dependent on communication with our teammates. This has not gone unnoticed by peripheral makers, and the number of quality headsets continues to grow each year. Here are our favorites for the 2017 holiday shopping season.

SteelSeries Arctis 7

Wireless headsets have a lot of upside. They offer freedom of movement, less chances of getting your wires snagged on something, and the ability to just walk into the kitchen to get another hot pocket. We don’t recommend that, by the way. The SteelSeries Arctis 7 headsets offer amazing quality at a very reasonable price. A retractable microphone, that offers decent quality, is a nice touch. The fabric headband is comfortable, though it may not be ideal for those with larger than average heads.

ASTRO Gaming A50

You really can’t have a list of the best gaming headsets without a mention or two of Astro’s lineup. Their flagship product, the ASTRO Gaming A50 headset, is a perfect example of high quality at a premium price. These babies don’t come cheap but you do get value for your money. Not only is a docking station included, but the A50s are also easy to connect to multiple devices at the same time, such as your PC and PlayStation 4, or your Xbox One and your phone. The microphone quality leaves a lot to be desired at times, but if they fit into your budget and you need the flexibility that the A50s provide, you should seriously consider them.

Like many more expensive options, it offers a swivel-to-mute microphone and is compatible with multiple gaming platforms.

Razer has been making gaming headsets for ages and they seem to have finally found a formula that works in the Razer ManO’War Wireless headset. Not only is it wireless, but it also features a much better microphone than what you might expect. There is no shortage of features here; everything from a retractable microphone, to quick controls, and 7.1 surround sound is included.

Last, but certainly not least, is a headset from perennial peripheral maker Logitech. The Logitech G933 Artemis Spectrum headset offers a unique look, complete with RGB lighting. But don’t let the fancy lighting fool you into thinking that this headset is more fluff than substance. The feature set is exhaustive and includes compatibility with any device you can think of, including the ability to connect a total of three devices and have them mixed into your ear holes.

If you don’t yet own a decent gaming headset, then this holiday season is the time to get it. Ask your gaming friends if your mic is any good. Tell them to be brutally honest, and then go from there. Not only do you deserve great sound in your ears, but your friends deserve to hear you clearly as well.

We hope you found something of use in this list. Be sure to have a look at our other Holiday Shopping Guides when you plan your gift purchases, whether they’re for yourself or someone else.
