The Best Horror Games On Xbox One

Layers Of Fear

Spooky season is coming in hot! Horror fans will be looking for the best scares to get them ready for Halloween. There is no shortage of horror games available today. Even games that are not naturally scary can have some horror elements (Bioshock is an excellent one, for example). I already covered the best horror games on the PlayStation 4, and there will be some overlap here, as there are plenty of third-party games that are excellent on both systems.

The Best Horror Games On Xbox One

There are plenty of horror games to get you ready for the Halloween season. Whether you are looking for a zombie-slaying survival game or running for your life from an extraterrestrial entity, here are the best horror games available on your Xbox One.

Resident Evil 2

Resident Evil 2 released in January 2019 and is a complete remake of the original Resident Evil 2 that released on the original PlayStation. It released to great reviews and is in the running for many people's game of the year in 2019.

In the game, you play as either Leon Kennedy or Claire Redfield in a zombie-infested Raccoon City and a bunch of the Umbrella Corporations mutations will do their best to take a piece out of you including the unstoppable Mr. X who will continuously stalk you down and appear out of nowhere.

Resident Evil 2 is great for anyone who wants to take a trip back to Raccoon City and experience the classic horror game in a new freshened up way with combat controls closer to the likes of Resident Evil 4.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

The Resident Evil series is on a roll right now. Resident Evil 2 received a ton of praise at the beginning of this year while Resident Evil 7: Biohazard did so earlier in the console generation. For the first time in the long-running franchise, a first-person view was taken to make the player feel more immersed in the creepy Baker house.

The Xbox One, unfortunately, does not have a VR option to experience this great horror game in like the PS4, but the game is still a great purchase. First-person horror games are arguably the best way to take in a horror game truly, and Resident Evil's first exposure to the view was a complete success.

Blair Witch

blair witch

Based on the Blair Witch Project movie series, the game takes place in the same woods from the movies as you help a search team look for a missing girl. You play as Ellis who is joined by a good boy German Sheppard named Bullet. Bullet alone makes this game worth playing, but if you are a horror fan who enjoys the Blair Witch movies, you are sure to have a good time here.

There are plenty of puzzles implemented here with digital camcorder footage that you will need to look through as well as monsters that will attack you while on your search. Throughout your time, Bullet will remain one of your biggest weapons and tools as you. Blair Witch is the most recent release you will find on this list and is recommended for this Halloween season.

Dead By Daylight

At the beginning of the current console generation, asymmetrical multiplayer games were appearing everywhere. Evolve, and Fable Legends are only a couple examples of early asymmetrical games that failed or were canceled before release. Dead By Daylight is undoubtedly one of the biggest successes of the infant genre.

In the game, four survivors attempt to repair generators in a closed area while being hunted down by a killer. While there are plenty of original characters, the game is also filled with iconic horror icons of the past. Michael Myers, Ghostface, and Ash Williams are just a few examples of characters that can be purchased and played with their own unique set of abilities. This game is by far more enjoyable with friends so if you have four friends with the game, start up a private party and a screamingly good time.

Layers Of Fear

Layers Of Fear is a game centered on the destructive, deteriorating mind of a painter. He is obsessed with creating his masterpiece painting that usually involves his wife, who ended up leaving him following his constant abuse of alcohol and neglect of her.

The game is focused on the story of the artist's past and his psychedelic visions that are slowly driving him insane. You explore his mansion and view the nightmarish paintings he has created and deal with his demons as they rear their ugly heads to him.

Dark Pictures: Man Of Medan

Supermassive Game's popular Until Dawn was a surprise hit on the PlayStation 4, so it is fortunate that their new IP, the Dark Pictures Anthology, is no longer a console exclusive.

Man Of Medan is the first entry in the Dark Pictures Anthology that is planned to be made of smaller story-based games from the developer over the years to come.

The focus is on controlling a group of people while your choices and quick-time event skills decide who lives and who dies. The group of people you are controlling have encountered a ghost ship. The story has multiple endings, and there are multiplayer options this time around where Until Dawn was strictly single-player. If playing online, you and one other person and play through the story together, and if you have a group of friends around a couch, you can pass the controller back and forth each taking control of one person each and seeing who survives at the end.

Dead Space

One of the biggest advantages the Xbox One has over the PlayStation 4 is its backward compatibility. Taking advantage of this, you can play quite a few excellent horror games that released on the Xbox 360. First up on our list, is the Dead Space series.

In Dead Space, you play as Isaac Clarke as he and his rescue team arrive on a radio silent space station infested with necromorphs, an alien species that can only be killed by shooting off their limbs. Dead Space is a terrifying series that still holds up today in the horror genre. While it is not likely that we will get a fourth game in the series soon if ever, all three games can be played on your Xbox One.

Left 4 Dead 2

left 4 dead 2

Left 4 Dead 2 is one of those Valve games that have fans continually asking for a third game in the series. The game focuses on teamwork as you and three others fight your way through constant hordes of zombies. The common infected sprint at you in unrelenting hordes while a host of special infected sprinkled throughout the campaigns tries to pick you off.

Left 4 Dead 2 is another game that released on the Xbox 360 that can be played on Xbox One via backwards compatibility. If you end up buying the downloadable campaigns, you will be able to play the entire first game in the second as well. All with the upgraded mechanics, tools, and new special infected that initially were not in the first game.

Evil Within

evil within

In Evil Within, you play as Sebastian Castellanos, a detective who is down on his luck after losing his daughter to a fire and his wife disappearing. He has been forced into a project called STEM, a machine that mends minds together with one mind at the center being the basis for the world. The problem with that is the mind at the center is a mentally unstable man bent on revenge.

Evil Within has many horrific monsters and locations you will fight your way through and is sure to creep you out. If you play the game and decide you like it, a sequel was made that picks back up with Sebastian as the main character again.

Alien Isolation

alien

Ellen Ripley's daughter, Amanda has been told that the flight recorder for her mother's ship, the Nostromo has been found aboard a ship, so to find closure with her mother's disappearance, she boards a spaceship occupied with a Xenomorph that is continuously hunting her.

Alien: Isolation is genuinely terrifying in the fact that you do not have much of a chance to fight back against the alien. Much of the game will rely on you finding areas to hide and hope the Xenomorph does not find you. You will find yourself sweating and your heartbeat racing while you navigate the ship.
