Greatest Multiplayer Games of All Time
Video games come in a wide variety of styles. Some are single players, some are multiplayer, and others have elements of both. One of the things that draw in many gamers is the multiplayer aspect of games. Various different games can be set up with friends. New friends can be found as well from all parts of the globe. Despite scores of multiplayer games available for gamers of all ages, only a select few make it to the top of the list as greatest multiplayer games of all time.
One of the greatest, most often played games of all time is Diablo II. This game, originally released in 2000, is a fantastic mix of RPG and Multiplayer. Online mode allows players to come together for Player vs. Player and Player vs. Monster modes. Diablo II is also one of the most played games at professional gaming competitions and conventions. Diablo II is having a sequel made, Diablo III, which has been in the works for several years already. A closed demo was released earlier this year. Despite a sequel coming out, Diablo II remains beloved and played by thousands everywhere.
Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos
Another of the greatest multiplayer games of all time is Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, a game that one numerous awards the year of its release including Game of the Year from various places. This game is a 2002 masterpiece of real time strategy. The four races that are playable in the game – Orcs, Humans, Night Elves and Undead – are pitted against one another. Campaigns of varying objectives are available to players facing friends in this iconic installment in the Warcraft universe.
Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings
This is another fantastic RTS game released in 1999 for PC and then again in 2001 for PlayStation. In this game players are dropped in the middle ages with a wide variety of civilizations to choose from. Players can pit against one another in online modes. Each player chooses a different civilization and battle against one another. There is also a campaign editor to create various scenarios to play with friends, some providing handicaps or a goal not usually attained during a normal multiplayer game.
Starcraft is a game often seen on the competitive gaming floor. Yet another RTS by Blizzard, this one came out in 1998. Set in the far future, Starcraft has a space age feel that brings another element of fun to an already fantastic game. A maximum of eight players can pit themselves against one another in a wide variety of gameplay modes ranging from typical scenarios such as destroying all other players to more unique and interesting scenarios such as football game simulations, hunting competitions and races.
Team Fortress 2
Team Fortress 2 is a 2007 release that has recently become free to play. This is a first person shooter that was made in a cartoon-like style that adds that extra element of fun to the game. Players can be a variety of characters, each with a different specialization and are divided into teams. Two teams are pitted against one another in a wide variety of scenarios and maps each with their own goal.
Half-Life: Counter-Strike is a fantastic first person shooter that was released in 2004. This was the first game in the Counterstrike universe, a fantastic game that still has many followers today. This is a very unique game in that it is itself a mod – but one that has achieved huge success and critical acclaim and has sequel upon sequel released.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Though a brand new release, this game has already broken records with over 9 million copies of the game sold within less than a week of its release. Already a beloved franchise, revamps in multiplayer modes make this game even better than before, with top notch graphics. There is also a new service that can be purchased on yearly for multiplayer modes that provide updates in content and new competitions and clan leveling.
The vast majority of games today include some aspect of the multiplayer. However, it is only the chosen few that are able to make it past the okay and good and achieve critical acclaim by both critics and fans alike. These are just some of the greatest multiplayer games of all time. There are many that clamor for the list, many that nearly make it yet fall short at the last moment. But the games featured here in this list, many of which are played by professional gamers at competitions at the national and international level, truly deserve the title of Greatest Multiplayer Games of All Time.
