Many people either love or hate sports related video games. There often seems to be no in between. Many sports lovers are huge fans of sports related video games, they can play football as their favorite players, they can play soccer from the comfort of their armchair when the weathers bad and knees are stiff, they can play their favorite game to watch on TV even though they aren’t nearly as good in real life. And there are many sports franchises that are fantastic editions to the world of gaming, deserving both as an edition to their respective gaming field and to video gaming at large. Other franchises, however, have seen their time. It’s time for these franchises to go the way of the dinosaur before they get even worse than they already are.
Major League Baseball 2K
There have been a slew of MLB 2K games. Being a franchise with so many games you’d think they’d be great, right? Wrong. None of the MLB 2K games have been that great. Maybe they’re okay for a play through, but even that depends on which one you pick up. None of the MLB 2K games have scored very high. Many reviews don’t exactly declare the franchise as golden. This is a perfect case of quit while your ahead. When all of your titles range from ehh to please don’t put me through this again, it’s time to go back to the drawing board and create a new title that is nothing like the old franchise. After all, even if MLB 2K does come out with a great game, no one would believe it and so the game would linger in anonymity with the rest of the sad, forgotten titles of the MLB 2K franchise.
Backbreaker is a fairly new franchise in the football scene with just two titles to its name. And it should stay that way. There are many football sims on the market and Backbreaker doesn’t make it anywhere near the top of the list. While the games may be fun upon boot up, all that fades quickly into the dull and repetitive. Not being able to adjust camera angles is a constant problem. Replays, at least in the first one, vary between annoying and funny, and overall gameplay is just too shallow. If you can’t make a fun football sim on the first or second try, please, just stop. Discounting the incredibly steep competition from franchises such as Madden, the fans will simply eat you alive.
Fan of the reality TV show Deadliest Catch? Hope you weren’t expecting too much from the video game franchise. Based off of games never do as well as their other media equivalents, but the video games based on the famed deep sea fishing show are just plain horrible. Graphics are ancient, and not in the reminiscent of early days of gaming way. It’s not uncommon for the game to crash for absolutely no reason whatsoever. Frame rate is also terrible and have we mentioned that it is simply visually unattractive? Two games are enough for Deadliest Catch franchise. We really don’t need any more titles that we can file under deadliest video game catches of all time.
Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games
While we love both Mario and Sonic, and we love them together, we just don’t love them at the Olympics. Two games have been made and a third in the franchise is scheduled for release next month. The first to received not so good reviews and unless there has been a miraculous back to the drawing board experience, we should be expecting more of the same. Wii movements were repetitive to a very high degree and many of the events seemed like they were just more of the same thing over and over again. Like many Wii games, it can be incredibly infuriating when your Wii simply refuses to accept commands and doesn’t recognize your motions, doubled by the fact that the game is competitive to begin with. While our two little friends Mario and Sonic are beloved by all, we just don’t want another Olympics title. Just stick to games like Sonic Generations, Mario Galaxy, Mario Cart, and a billion other titles associated with Mario and Sonic. At the Olympics franchise, however, is one that they can safely put behind them as a tried and failed experiment.
There are some fantastic sports games out there. These just simply aren’t them. This wide range of franchises should be discontinued for doing more harm than good. Please, just quit while your ahead. Maybe sports franchises just aren’t your thing. Maybe you should try your hand at some FPS instead. And Mario, seriously bro, just stick to watching the Olympics from the stands.
