One of the best things about gaming in 2017 was the variety of titles that were released. This meant that there was something for everyone, and this applied just as much to the Xbox One as to other platforms. This year also saw the release of the Xbox One X, giving Xbox fans a way to play their games in 4k. Xbox gamers this year had access to a great variety of games, offering all kinds of styles of gameplay.
Best Xbox One Games of 2017
In this article we will be running through some of the best-selling Xbox One games of the year. All games have a calendar release date of 2017. So let’s take a look at some of the best Xbox One games from this year.
Destiny 2 saw Bungie release the follow up to their extremely popular game 2014 title. The game rapidly became a best seller, with millions of Guardians buying in to experience more the world they had grown to love. If you are planning on picking this up for someone for Christmas, be sure to subtly check that they haven’t already bought it, as Destiny players are a passionate bunch.
Assassin’s Creed: Origins
This year saw Ubisoft release what many people consider to be the best Assassin’s Creed title in years. Set in Egypt, players are given a vast open world to explore, filled with interest and intrigue. Fans of the series were in for a treat, as the story dealt with the very origin story of the Assassin’s themselves. Personally I truly loved Assassin’s Creed: Origins, and found it almost impossible to put down.
Call of Duty: WWII
The yearly Call of Duty release saw the series return to the wars of yesterday, taking players to the harrowing events of World War II. Gone are the aggressive movement systems the series has explored in recent years, and they have returned to a more “boots on the ground” style of combat. Always a huge game on consoles, for many people the Xbox One has long been series spiritual home.
Forza Motorsport 7
Forza Motorsport 7 is the latest installment of one of the Xbox’s best known racing games. Forza goes out of its way to provide content based around some of the world’s best known racing tracks and cars, while also maintaining a level of accessibility that makes it welcoming to new players.
Cuphead is one of the more interesting indie titles to release on Xbox One this year. Combining an amazing art style based on old cartoons, with a challenging combination of platforming and shmup mechanics, this proved to be one of the standout games of the year. A must buy for people who enjoy a solid challenge from their games.
Middle-Earth: Shadow of War
Shadow of War saw developers Monolith Productions expanding on many of the systems that had made the first game in the series such a success. A combination of vast and detailed space to explore, Lord of the Rings inspired lore, and in-game systems that provided interesting and personalized enemies for each player, it was certainly one of the most ambitious titles released this year.
Wolfenstein II:The New Colossus
Wolfenstein 2 held up the principles of old school arcade shooters. Lots of bullets, and lots of bad guys to fire them at. At times verging headlong into the ridiculous, the story managed to be funny, horrifying and emotional in equal measure. It also features some of the best looking guns from any game in recent memory.
FIFA games come each year, and each year they seem to improve a little more. With a huge and passionate fan base, online games are easy to find, and the series long standing Ultimate Team mode means that people always have a reason to play another game. It’s also well known that sport games provide some of the best head to head competition for local competitive play you can get. Bragging rights are always on the line.
Prey turned out to be a far more nuanced and complex game that most people imagined. What really stood out about it was the sheer number of ways players could go about solving the problems that it presented them. This really seems to land well with players, who reacted very positively to the freedom the game allowed them while playing it.
Halo Wars 2
Sadly, on consoles, good strategy games can be hard to find. One of the main issues is that many people see the control system as being a bit lacking when it comes to the genre. Halo Wars never had this problem and neither does its sequel. Halo Wars 2 sees the good guys and villains of the Halo series once again go to war on a major scale.
Now, this is certainly not an exhaustive list of Xbox One release, but it does cover some of the best games released on the console this year.
