Nintendo isn’t striving as they once were. With competitors like Sony and Microsoft pushing the envelope on how well games can look graphically, Nintendo seems to be fixed on bringing out innovation to their console releases. With that said, often times we’re finding more shovelware being tossed out for these consoles. However, where Nintendo truly shines is their handheld portable video game systems. Even though most of these portable consoles are being tossed aside for smartphones and tablets, there’s still quite a few different video games we’re excited to play this year on the Nintendo 3DS.

Dementium: The Ward, Developer: Renegade Kid, Release Date: Q2 2015

Dementium: The Ward

Dementium: The Ward is a survival-horror first-person shooter that originally was released on the Nintendo DS. The game focused on a William Redmoor, a man who is going through brain surgery. During the procedure, the doctor realizes that his brain is in grave danger and the only way of saving William Redmoor is by feeding him nightmares to fight back against. With a few twists and turns, overall the reception of the game was found to be rather mixed. During September of 2014, development studio Renegade Kid had announced through Twitter that they are currently working on an enhanced version of the video game and it will be released within the Nintendo 3DS eShop during Q2 2015.

Final Fantasy Explorers is a bit different compared to previous installments to Final Fantasy franchise. The game actually plays out more like Capcom’s Monster Hunter where gamers will take on different quests that range from easy to hard difficulty. Included within the game are over five hundred different pieces of equipment that can be created with various materials or won by completing quests as well. The story for Final Fantasy Explorers is set on the journey of collecting crystals, objects that contain the source of life and civilization. These crystals are scarce and only areas that have been uncharted will likely contain them but, you’ll find that various enemies will be lurking about. Now the game has already released in Japan with no release date set for North America. In fact, the game hasn’t even officially been announced for markets outside of Japan. Even though it hasn’t been officially announced, the Square Enix did file for a trademark within North America which means will likely see the developers making an announcement for a game release soon.

This new Ace Attorney video game will likely be releasing in North America. The video game is actually set as a prequel to the Ace Attorney series where players will be taking the role of Ryunosuke Naruhodo an ancestor to Phoenix Wright. Taking place in the 19th century, Ryunosuke looks to become a defense attorney and travels to England where he will study more on the subject by working with Sherlock Holmes. Much of the same gameplay mechanics have been brought over to the game but instead of one judge determining if players win the case or not, a jury will decide the outcome. If by the end of your case, the jury fails to be persuaded then the case will be considered a failure.

Mighty No. 9, Developer: Comcept, Inti Creates, Abstraction Games, Release Date: April 2015

Mighty No. 9 does look similar to Mega Man and that’s no mistake. The same creator for Mega Man, Keiji Inafune, is behind the development of Mighty No. 9. Development for the video game started up after a successful Kickstarter. In fact, the Kickstarter was so successful that at the end of its campaign deadline, the project raised over 400% of the asking goal. Because money reached past the initial goal, the development team was able to add new stages and ports for the video game. Mighty No. 9 plays out similar to Mega Man, a 2D platform genre title. Gamers play the game as Mighty No. 9, one of the robots made in the Mighty lineup. However, Mighty No. 9 discovers that his fellow androids were infected by a virus. Now it’s up to Mighty No. 9 to defeat the once fellow robots and discover the person behind the virus.

Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. is whacky and fun with a wide range of different characters from fictional stories to non-fictional historical periods tossed into the mix. Set in a steampunk fantasy version of London, Henry Fleming is giving the American Embassy a rundown of security protocols when the city becomes attacked by aliens. Now it’s up to you with the help of various characters which includes from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, and Tom Sawyer to save the world from destruction. Played out as a turn-based strategy, gamers will have to take turns maneuvering and attacking while maintaining their steam gauge. Furthermore, the game is compatible with Super Smash Bros. series of Amiibo figures. Gamers can scan these figures such as Marth, Ike and Lucina to play throughout the game.
