Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End just got delayed to Spring 2016, generating an uncalculated amount of pain in millions of gamers spread around the world. It was a very sad and unexpected news for many reasons, but I trust Naughty Dog when they say that the game will end up being way better than it could have been if releasing in 2015. And we have also plenty examples of games that got better and better, becoming masterpieces in a couple of cases, after a few delays:
Here you have a short list of them, where we don’t take in account titles like Watch Dogs and DriveClub that in any manner had benefits from the extra work time of their developers.
The Last of Us
Of course we begin with The Last of Us. The biggest masterpiece from Naughty Dog got delayed from May 7, 2013 to June 14, 2013, and we know how much the extra work from Neil Druckmann & co. was helpful on the overall quality. I know it was just a month while on Uncharted 4 there will be five or six more months to wait but, you know, if these are the results… maybe we should be more patient and think to the final quality of a title, more than having it as soon as we desire it. Don’t you think?
Mafia II was supposed to ship in 2007, while it finally arrived on the market in 2010. The wait and hype were rising as 2K Czech was reluctant to give any update on the project. I remember many thought that the game was just vaporware or ending up with a sad cancellation. Luckily enough, nothing of this happened, and in the end we had the Mafia sequel that we all deserved and waited for so long. The story was great, shooting and atmosphere, too, even though the game suffered from longevity and scope, due to the renounce to a true open world to explore.
Grand Theft Auto V
Actually it is still in the process of being delayed, as the PC version, initially slated for Fall 2014, will be out only in the month of April. Grand Theft Auto V, anyway, was expected in the first half of 2013 and, in the end, arrived on the shelves in September. It was a great success, in my opinion Xbox 360/PS3 version was simply the best game of its generation, and it grew even bigger once it released in November 2014 on PS4 and Xbox One thanks to an entirely new first-person perspective. I can’t wait to play it one more time on my PC.
Remedy first announced the game at E3 2005, then used it as a benchmark to showcase the power of Intel new Quad Core processors, but Alan Wake didn’t see the light of the day, on Xbox 360, before May 2010. For many gamers, the title lacked variety and its huge explorable areas outlined the fact that, yes, the original concept for an open world game had been heavily revamped. I loved it anyway because of the story, the characters, the atmosphere, the narrative, the collectibles and the shooting mechanics. I found out it was fun once I completed the story mode thinking I was just in the first half…
Rebooting a long-running series is never as easy as it seems. You have to revolutionize the brand, almost deleting all that the gamers have been used to by the franchise, and you have to do it good so you don’t harm its popularity. That’s why no one was surprised when Tomb Raider was postponed from Fall 2012 to March 2013. The game was a huge success and people enjoyed it so much that Microsoft granted the rights for the exclusivity of its sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider, for Xbox 360 and Xbox One naming it de facto the Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End killer.
