The Best Minecraft Horror Maps

It should be no surprise that Minecraft offers infinite possibilities when it comes to creating custom maps and engrossing single-player adventures. But for some creators, there are eerier things to encounter in the world of Minecraft than just Creepers. We’ve spotlighted some of our favorite horror themed maps, which are packed with creepy ambiance, chilling dialogue and jumpscares galore!

It’s important to note that some of these maps are only compatible with earlier Minecraft versions. Thankfully Mojang offers a helpful tutorial on running earlier versions of the game. Even if you’re not down to playing through a map yourself, we’d definitely recommend checking out some Let’s Play videos for these maps as they’re all great for a scare!

Our favorite Minecraft Horror maps

Late

You’re just showing up to work a little late, how scary can that be? Extremely, apparently. Late is a marvelous horror experience crammed with custom models and textures that really lend to a surprisingly haunting story. Late is available for download in censored or uncensored versions. This map does a great job of bringing out the creepy potential in everyday environments.

Enceladus

Enceladus really takes horror storytelling to the next level, with a detailed story told through in-game books and conversations. You’ll play as Dr. Fischer, an astronaut and government explorer, investigating Enceladus, one of Saturn's moons, where a team of settlers were sent over fifty years ago. Nobody has heard from this moon’s inhabitants in years, and you’re about to find out why. It’s worth noting that Enceladus does include profanity and does not offer a censored version to download.

The Orphanage

You’re on the long ride home after an equally long trip. You don’t realize it, but you haven’t been keeping an eye on the fuel gauge. You can barely keep your eyes open. Soon your car is out of gas and you find yourself stranded in the middle of nowhere. You certainly won’t get anything done by staying in your car, so you head out to find shelter and hopefully assistance. Alas, instead you find the Orphanage.

Panoris High

Panoris High puts you in the role of Skyler, who has become disconnected from her classmates during a school trip. Forced to find someplace to stay for the night, you'll end up at an abandoned school, Panoris High. Live through the night and you’ll likely learn just why Panoris was abandoned in the first place. The atmosphere of the city and school do an excellent job of creating a haunting exploration experience. Definitely give this one a try!

No Words

No Words tells an absolutely chilling story that starts off innocently enough. You’re just waiting for your kids to come home from the store, enjoying some of your favorite music, what could go wrong? Something went wrong. Something went very wrong, and your family is nowhere to be seen. This chilling tale perfectly executes a horror story filled with fear, guilt, and more.

Granny

Unfortunately for you, Granny has no interest in baking you pies or telling you stories of her younger days. Nope, Granny wants to kill you. Come on, Granny, not cool. Originally created by D.VLoper (and available for iOS and Android), the horror experience has been recreated in Minecraft and it does a pretty good job of capturing the horror of the original. You’ll have to do your best to escape Granny’s home, solving puzzles and hopefully not getting chopped to pieces. Sound like your kind of game? Be sure to check it out, as well as the original!

Lights Out

Are you afraid of the dark? Even if you’re not, Lights Out may just be enough to change your mind. Lights Out takes inspiration from PC horror titles such as Amnesia: The Dark Descent and makes excellent use of low lightning to create a frightful ambiance. You’ll navigate the map by candlelight. While the adventure is a bit short, it’s certainly a haunting and worthwhile experience.
