Sorry kids, it’s back to school with you. September is back, but it’s not all going to be home work and high school hierarchies. Major video game releases are spilling into September this year, the month now brings a host of new and exciting games.
Don’t get caught with it in class, but here’s our cheat sheet for games to play over the coming month.
Sept. 4
Dragon Quest XI (PS4, PC)
Dragon Quest fans have had to wait a long time for this one. The last home console game to release in the west was Dragon Quest VIII, in 2005. But an epic wait deserves an epic adventure, filled with colorful heroes, new friends, monsters, and smilin’ slimes. All designed in the distinct style of Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama.
Sept. 7
Marvel’s Spider-Man (PS4)
A brand new PS4 exclusive from Insomniac Games is swinging into action. After the Kingpin is arrested, Spider-Man’s biggest enemies are teaming up to take him down, including the mysterious Mr. Negative. Sony has kept the mastermind of Parker’s nightmare a secret. We’re putting our money on Stilt-Man.
Sept. 14
Shadow of the Tomb Raider (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
Having successfully risen in her last adventure, the new survivalist Lara Croft is ready to raid the tombs of the world. Racing against a paramilitary group hoping to weaponize magical artifacts, Croft accidentally starts the Mayan apocalypse, a disaster almost as bad as the Alicia Vikander movie earlier this year.
Sept. 18
Transference (PS4, PC)
Ubisoft’s psychological VR title, Transference, is arriving on PS4 and PC this month. The game is a mystery-horror puzzle game about a simulation of corrupted memories strewn together by a troubled scientist. It’s the first game from Elijah Wood’s horror studio SpectreVision.
Sept. 20
The Gardens Between (Switch, PS4, PC)
In this charming puzzle game, players must manipulate time to solve puzzles through a beautifully crafted narrative adventure. Your job is to discover the secrets of the garden islands, a mysterious world of oversized discarded objects
Light Fingers (Switch)
Even thieves need their downtime. In a hybrid between Mario Party and Dungeons and Dragons, Light Fingers has four players explore an ever-changing, mechanical board for the best loot, sneakiest routes, and greatest ways to backstab one another.
Sept. 21
Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country (Switch)
Nearly a year after the game released, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is getting its first big expansion. So big, in fact, that Nintendo has released it as a stand alone game. The DLC follows the events before the game, before Rex and Pyra even existed. It’s always Reyn Time somewhere.
Sept. 27
Life is Strange 2 – Episode 1 (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
The sequel to the beloved and award winning supernatural adventure series, Life is Strange, is finally set to begin in September. In this game, you play as two brothers running away to Mexico after a strange and unfortunate run-in with the police.
Sept. 28
Dragon Ball FighterZ (Switch)
Bandai Namco’s Dragon Ball fighting game, one of the biggest games of the year, is finally coming to Switch. All the current DLC for the game will be available as a separate same-day purchase, so you won’t have to wait six months for a different Goku power level. Which can’t be said for the show.
FIFA 19 (PC, Switch, PS4, Xbox One)
Another year, another FIFA. Albeit with a few neat additions. Champions and Europe league licenses give the game new options in career and online modes. EA has also given players new custom rules, such as the ability to turn the referee off, for those who want to watch the world burn.
