How to Unlock Subclasses in Destiny 2
How you gain access to subclasses in Destiny 2 is very different to the original game. They are no longer tied to story missions and instead take the form of drops from chests. At the start of the game you only have access to a single subclass. When you open a chest a Subclass Relic may drop for you. They are not a guaranteed drop so you will have to farm the chests to get them.
The first subclass will drop from level seven onward, whilst the second will drop from level fourteen. Once the relic drops you will notice a second subclass symbol on your Inventory page.
To power up your Relic you must complete more public events, so keep an eye out in the Director for when they pop up on the map. Also, a little tip here; once you have activated the Banner for the Public Event any kills you make count, so if you have to wait for the event to start it is worth your time to run around the area killing enemies.
Once your relic is 100 percent charged you will receive on onscreen message telling you that your strength is growing. You can now return to the Shard of Traveller on Earth to finish restoring your Light. Start the mission and make your way through the forest, you will come to a portal. Don’t be alarmed, simply walk through it and prepare to fight. You will need to do this a couple of times until you eventually arrive at a Shard of the Traveller. Inspect it, then prepare for a big assault.
You will be attacked by many enemies but thankfully have access to Bountiful Light allowing you to endlessly Super. After you use your ability just run into the pools of Light where it will swiftly recharge. Once this portion is complete simply step back through the portal and the mission will end.
You now have access to your new Subclass and can use it during the game. You will need to unlock elements of it with Upgrade Points, the same as your first Subclass. Make sure you continue to keep an eye out for chests, not just for the loot but also to ensure you get access to all the abilities your Guardian can wield.
