Destiny 2 - Best Kinetic Weapons for PvP and PvE

Crucible Action

Destiny 2 is filled with weapons, but how do you decide which one to infuse and bring with you on your journey to max Power? That’s easy, you let people like me put hundreds of hours into the game and find which weapons are worth your time and which aren’t. Today, we will be looking at Kinetic weapons, your first slot in your character screen.

One of the most interesting things about Kinetic weapons is that you cannot apply an elemental effect to them. Arc, Solar and Void mods won’t work. You will need a Kinetic mod and these can be quite rare. The only way to get them is by buying a weapon mod from the Gunsmith. Even then, you only have a one-in-four chance of the mod dropping for you. As such, you want to be sure you want those extra five points of Power in that gun. The list below covers some of my favorites, how to get them, and where they excel.

Better Devils

Destiny 2 - Best Kinetic Weapons for PvP and PvE
Better DevilsTL;DR Games • Fair Use

Why It’s Good

Better Devils is a high impact, medium range Hand Cannon with good stability and solid handling. What makes this Hand Cannon stand out from the rest of the Kinetic weapons is the fact that rounds explode on impact. What this means, is that when you are nailing those precision shots, the round is exploding and scoring several less damaging hits from the same bullet. It’s one of the top PvE Hand Cannons in the game and is well worth your time. My main reason for using Better Devils, outside of the exploding rounds, is that it is balanced. Magazine size, reload speed, handling and stability are all well balanced and I never feel like circumstances are punishing me for using this gun.

How to Get It

Better Devils is a crucible Hand Cannon and can drop as an end of match reward, from a Package from Shaxx after handing in Tokens, or from a Powerful Engram after completing the Call to Arms weekly challenge.

Origin Story

Why It’s Good

Assault Rifles are a big deal in Destiny 2 right now and options around Kinetic weapons are limited. This makes the Origin Story a solid option. From a strictly mathematical standpoint the Scathelocke may be a better choice, but the Origin Story comes with a Rampage perk which will increase your damage for each kill you score, stacking up to three times. I have found success with this weapon in both PvE and PvP, especially as the Origin Story maintains it’s accuracy over range.

How to Get It

The Origin Story can be gotten by earning Vanguard Tokens in the Strike Playlist and handing them in to Zavala. Get lucky with your Packages and it will be in there for you. You may also get the weapon by doing a Nightfall, from the Powerful Gear engram you get as a reward.

Nightshade

Destiny 2 - Best Kinetic Weapons for PvP and PvE
NightshadeTL;DR Games • Fair Use

Why It’s Good

Pulse Rifles are not in the strongest spot in Destiny 2 but if you want to try one in PvP you could do worse than the Nightshade. It’s a low impact, high rate of fire Pulse with good stability and handling, exactly my prefered archetype in the game.  It also comes with the Tactical Mag perk, which increase stability, reload speed and magazine size. Truthfully this is my preferred Kinetic option for PvP and I have found that long range enemies can get a nasty surprise from how fast this thing will burst them down at distance when I am landing burst on their exposed heads. The fact that it has an intrinsic perk that also increase mobility means you become a very dangerous strafe shooter for your enemies to try and engage with.

Finally, it also has the Kill Clip perk, which buffs your damage if you reload the weapon after a kill. That buff is the difference between a four burst kill and a three burst kill. It’s a very strong PvP weapon if you play well into the perks.

How To Get It

The Nightshade can be easy to get if you are lucky. Once you complete some Strikes for Zavala he will offer you some guns to pick from, and the Nightshade is one of them. If you have already passed this point in the game then doing Strikes will get you tokens and the Nightshade can drop from Vanguard packages.

Mida Multi Tool

Destiny 2 - Best Kinetic Weapons for PvP and PvE
Mida Multi-ToolTL;DR Games • Fair Use

Why It’s Good

The Mida Multi Tool is a carryover weapon from Destiny 1. It is, arguably, the strongest PvP Scout Rifle in game for a number of reasons. It offers a big speed boost when drawn, stops your radar from dissappearing when you ADS, and has extremely good handling and a fast reload speed. On top of that, if you also run the Mida Mini Tool it will grant its speed perk when the Mini Tool is drawn.

The Mida Multi Tool is the ultimate Kinetic weapon for locking down lanes in PvP due to it’s range, accuracy, damage, and the fact that it is nearly impossible to get flanked because your radar will be active. There is a reason this weapon is so commonly seen in Trials of the Nine.

How To Get It

Despite being an Exotic you won’t need to pray to RNGesus to get this weapon. Once you have all of the story missions wrapped up in the EDZ, Devrim will give you a Mida Mini Tool and a quest to get the Mida Multi Tool. For more information on the quest, and how to complete it, check out our Mida Multi-Tool Guide.

Nameless Midnight

Destiny 2 - Best Kinetic Weapons for PvP and PvE
Nameless MidnightTL;DR Games • Fair Use

Why It’s Good

If the Mida Multi Tool is the Scout Rifle king for PvP then the Nameless Midnight takes that crown for PvE. The Nameless Midnight is a high impact scout with a solid rate of fire and a healthy reload speed. But, much like the Better Devils, it fires explosive rounds. It will strip enemies of their shields better than pretty much any of the other Kinetic weapons, is not affected by the Prism Modifier in Nightfalls (this modifier does not impact Kinetic damage) and will allow Guardians to operate from a healthy and safe distance when engaging major threats. This extra safety gives it a leg up on the Better Devils for you safety conscious Guardians.

How To Get It

To get your hands on the Nameless Midnight it’s back to the Strike Playlist gathering up tokens for Zavala. This weapon can also roll out from a Gunsmith Engram, or a random Legendary drop, but the chances of this appear to be reasonably slim.

Antiope D

Destiny 2 - Best Kinetic Weapons for PvP and PvE
Antiope-DTL;DR Games • Fair Use

Why It’s Good

SMGs are extremely powerful at close range in the Crucible. The simple addition of a Kinetic Counter Balance mod will extend the Antiope D’s lethality much further.  The Precision Frame perk means the weapon has a more vertical recoil pattern, making it easier to control. The weapon also comes with Tactical Mag and Kill Clip perks, making it a monster in close quarters group fights. If you really want to bump up it’s range then you can run the Ricochet Rounds perk instead.

The best thing about the Antiope D isn’t just that it is a strong SMG, it is also a strong kinetic SMG. Many of the better SMGs and Sidearms in the game fall into the Energy weapons category. The Antiope allows you to use the Kinetic slot to cover your up-close engagements if you wish to use one of Destiny 2 powerful Energy weapons to take care of ranged targets.

How to Get It

The Antiope D appears to be a rare enough drop from Gunsmith engrams, which you get by handing in weapon parts to Banshee-44. As a little tip, the “Exodus Siege” adventure on Nessus will reward you with a blue weapon called the Sondok C, which has similar stats to the Antiope but different perks. It is worth experimenting with both to see which one you prefer as one of your Kinetic weapons.

Another pro tip, if you have already done the Exodus Siege mission, it is one of the four Adventures on offer from Failsafe this week. If you don’t have access to them you can just wrap up the rest of the Nessus Adventures and they will be there in Failsafe’s menu.

True Prophecy

Destiny 2 - Best Kinetic Weapons for PvP and PvE
True ProphecyTL;DR Games • Fair Use

Why It’s Good

I don’t see too many people talking about this Hand Cannon, but it is slowly becoming on of my favorite Kinetic weapons in the game. Boasting a massive Impact stat, it is one of the hardest hitting Hand Cannons you can get. It also has a perk called Time Payload, which results in your targets taking extra damage from the round exploding shortly after impact. The combination of high precision damage and the extra explosive damage means this weapon will one shot pretty much any mob in the game, and take chunk out of large enemies with each shot. It is burdened by high recoil and a long reload, which may be putting some people off, however. Personally, I love this gun, though, so it is getting a mention here as a personal favorite.

How To Get It

Some bad news here, as the True Prophecy is a Future War Cult faction weapon that was available from their package drops during the recent Faction Rally. The good news is that it will hopefully return in the next Faction Rally if you want to check it out. Apparently those faction weapons also have a small chance to drop from Cayde’s hidden treasures as well, so if you are super lucky you might score one that way.

That will do it for the best Kinetic weapons in Destiny 2. Be sure to check out my top picks for Energy and Power weapons as well, and if you need any help with other aspects of Destiny 2 then check out our Guide Hub.
