How to Download and Play Custom Songs in Beat Saber
If you’re like me and you’ve tried out Beat Saber in your HTC Vive or Oculus Rift, you can’t wait to try out more songs. After calming down from all the sweatiness and breathless sneaky exercise that the game provides, you may want to check out the instructions below to learn how you can download and add custom songs to Beat Saber.
How to Add Custom Songs
Install the Song Loader Plugin
To prepare Beat Saber to accept custom songs, you’ll first need to download and install a small open source plugin created for this particular purpose. You can find the Song Loader Plugin over at Github. For first time installations, follow these steps.
- Download the first time installer zip file.
- Make sure that Beat Saber is not running.
- Extract the contents of the zip file into Beat Saber‘s installation folder. This will vary depending on whether you installed Beat Saber via the Oculus Store or Steam. You’re looking for the folder that contains Beat Saber.exe.
- Drag Beat Saber.exe on top of IPA.exe. Yep, drag one EXE onto the other one.
That’s it! Even though there will now be a Beat Saber (Patch & Launch) shortcut in the folder, you can still just launch the game as per normal.
If you’re upgrading from a prior version, the Github page for the Song Loader Plugin has special upgrade instructions to follow.
Download Custom Songs
In order to find songs that will work with Beat Saber, you can visit a site like Beat Saver, which aggregates custom songs, complete with ratings and comments. All the songs on Beat Savers are downloaded as zip files and contain a folder with several files, including the song inside. In order to install the songs into Beat Saber, simply extract the zip file into the CustomSongs folder that the Song Loader Plugin created. You can see an example of my CustomSongs folder below.
Now simply launch Beat Saber and the new custom songs will be available to choose from in the song selection list.
One word of caution, many of the custom songs at Beat Saver are not for the faint of heart. Many of them are only available in Hard or Expert difficulties, and I will admit that I struggled trying to find great songs at a difficulty level that was not too tough for me. However, everyone’s skill levels are different, so give it a try!
