A guide that summarizes all the unique hats and masks you can find while playing Red Dead Redemption 2.
When you have a huge game map like the one of Red Dead Redemption 2 one of the most beautiful things you can do is dot it with mysteries and secrets (both easy and hard to find).
Rockstar did not miss the chance to do it and filled the map with secrets. Some are necessary for 100% completion, others are not (but they are so funny that you will have the temptation to discover them before the necessary ones).
This is what happened with the secret hats and masks: they do not bring any improvement in performance for Arthur but allow customization of the character (and some of these are quite hilarious, so the temptation to make them yours will be substantial).
In this Red Dead Redemption 2 guide, we will see what they are and where you can find them. Please note that once you have one of these, it will be added to your inventory permanently (but just the ones you don’t have to steal from someone).
Where to Find Unique Hats Location
Boater Hat
This hat is worn by a single NPC, so all you have to do is know how to find him: you can find this character in the Rodhes post office but only in the afternoon. Please note that this hat can’t be added permanently in your inventory.
Bolero Straw and Pinned Hat
You can find these three hats in the Fort Mercer Area (we suggest you go there during the Epilogue due to the incident in Blackwater that prevents you from safely exploring the area during the rest of the game). Please note that those can’t be added permanently in your inventory.
Cattleman, Cutter and Rodeo Hats
This hat spawns randomly on NPCs that are in a small farm east of Flat neck Station. In this case, randomly means both that they don’t have an exact time spawn during the day and that they can spawn on a random NPC. So it’s all about luck.
Civil War Hat
As you might expect from the name, this hat is tied to an area related to the war (in fact you can find it in the ruins of a fort). If you don’t know which fort are we speaking about, we will tell you: is the one in the southwest of the Van Horn Trading Post (to locate it better, look at the R of Kamassa River in the map and go north of it). Once you’ve reached the fort, go inside and enter the basement: the Hat is waiting for you there.
Conductor’s Hat
This hat can be dropped by train conductors and to get one could be difficult. To do that, you have to make them exit their post by committing a crime. At this point, you can punch or kill them to drop the hat. Please note that this hat can’t be added permanently in your inventory.
Crown Bucket and Western Homburg
These hats can be obtained from Annesburg’s NPCs. Luckily they have a high chance to appear so getting them should not take too long. Please note that this hat can’t be added permanently in your inventory.
Flop, Moonshine Hats
You can find these hats in the Emerald Ranch area. They spawn randomly so you may have to spend a lot of time with them: look at every NPC and trust in your luck. Please note that these hats can’t be added permanently in your inventory.
Homburg, Gaucho and Farmer’s Hat
These hats can be obtained in the Strawberry area. Luckily they have a high chance to appear, so getting them should not take too long. Please note that stagecoach divers wear them the most and that these hats can’t be added permanently in your inventory.
Jipijapa Panama Hat
A single NPC wears this hat (that you can identify thanks to his glasses). You can find him on a small farm to the northeast of Rhodes and only in the afternoon. Please note that this hat can’t be added permanently in your inventory.
Military Mountie Hat
This hat can only be obtained during missions involving the Indian Reservation (in chapter 4 and 6). More than one NPC could wear one of them, so all you have to do is look around and find one. Please note that this hat can’t be added permanently in your inventory.
Miner’s Hat
Where would you expect to find a miner’s hat? Obviously in mine and it is here you will find it. If you want to know exactly where it is, we tell you: you will find the Miner’s Hat near Big Valley in West Elizabeth (just south of the gap between the words Big and Valley if you look in the map). Once inside use a lantern, blow the rocks up and go through the hole. Then go right and enter the room you find: Miner’s Hat is waiting for you, with its light at your service: you can turn off the lantern now.
Morion Helmet
Even if this isn’t a hat, it is considered like it is. You can find it on top of Mount Hagen (Grizzlies west area). A skeleton wears it so look for it (you will find it in correspondence of the H in Hagen).
Nevada Hat
If you want to find this hat to look like a real gambler, all you have to do is enter a cave located behind a massive waterfall next to Window Rock (see at the Ambarino’s A on the map). Be careful and try not to die while attempting to get over the waterfall: it could be very slippery here.
Panama Hat
This hat is worn by a single NPC, so all you have to do is know how to find him: you can find this character in the Rodhes post office but only in the afternoon. Please note that this hat can’t be added permanently in your inventory.
Plantation Gambler Hat
This could be the most challenging hat to find in the whole game. That’s why it is worn by a specific NPC that covers a large area (Braithwaite Manor). So all you have to do is include this area too and trust in your luck. Please note that this hat can’t be added permanently in your inventory.
Scarecrow Hat
If you expect to find a scarecrow hat on a scarecrow you’re already on your way; we’ll tell you the rest. You can find it on the farm in the southwest of Emerald Ranch (south of the gap between the H and the A of New Hannover, if you look in the map). To get that, all you have to do is shoot the hat. Please note that it is better to do it during the night, to avoid making farmers angry.
Slouch Bucket, Bag, Worn Stovepipe, and Roanoke Hat
These hats can be only obtained in the Butcher’s Creek (New Hanover). Luckily they have a high chance to appear, so getting them should not take too long. Please note that these hats can’t be added permanently in your inventory.
Sun Hat
Guarma’s NPCs wear this hat, so it can only be obtained while playing Chapter 5. Please note that Arthur isn’t welcome in the village so be careful when you approach the area. Please note that this hat can’t be added permanently in your inventory.
Tricorn Hat
You can find this hat to the west of the town of Rhodes (Lemoyne). It is located on an island to the west of the town so bring a strong horse with you: you will need it.
Viking Helmet
Even if this isn’t a hat, it is considered like it is. You can find it in a tomb located to the northwest of Annesburg, in the middle of the bend of the river (note that the tomb is north of the first N in Annesburg if you look at the map).
Wide Slouch
A single NPC wears this hat: you can find this character while traveling down a mountain in an area located southwest of Window Rock (Ambarino). Please note that this hat can’t be added permanently in your inventory.
Where to Find Unique Masks Location
NPCs don’t wear mask, but you can find them either purchasing from a fence or heading to specific locations on the map. You can wear them to hide your identity (guess why).
Canvas Sack Hood, Cloth Mask, Executioner Hood, Metal Skull Mask, Psycho Mask
To get those masks, all you have to do is unlock them in chapter 2 and go to any fence to buy them.
Cat Skull Mask
To find this mask, look right to the north of L in Lakay on the map (near the shore of the Lake). Once there look for a half-submerged shack: you will find a hole that allows you to enter a room. The mask is waiting for you just on the wall above.
Pagan Skull Mask
This mask is pretty easy to find.
Look for the area to the west of Owanjila Lake (west of the town of Strawberry) delimitated by the river and the train track. Once there, look for a place which seems to have hosted some rituals: the mask will wait for you in the middle of the markings.
Pig Mask
This mask can be found to the northwest of the Van Horn Trading Post (if you look at the map, you will find it right to the south of the S of Annesbourg). Once there look for the river to the southwest of the Elysian Pool.
Ram Skull Mask
The only way to obtain this mask is by completing the game because to get it to have to access the southern part of the map. If you meet the requirements, go to Rathskeller Fork and look for a goat pen: the mask will be inside.
