Flying is one of the most fun aspects of Anthem, but how long you can stay in the air is limited. Use these tips to stay skyward for longer.
In Anthem, you can take to the skies in your Javelins. This is one of the most fun parts of the game, but unfortunately, your flight time is limited. As heat builds up in your thrusters, you need to let it cool off. This is usually done by landing, allowing the heat bar to die down and then taking to the skies again. If you don’t, your thrusters will overheat, meaning you will not be able to fly at all until they cool. This can be a real problem in combat and might get you killed.
An important thing to note, killing your thrusters and falling won’t cool your thrusters. It won’t generate more heat, but the stored heat will only start to go down when you are on the ground.
Don’t worry though; we have a couple of tricks that will help you keep cool, and stay flying for longer.
How To Cool Your Javelin Thrusters And Fly Longer
Method 1 – Dive
By flying straight down in your Javelin, your thrusters will cool down a bit. With the vast vertical nature of Anthem’s open world, it will often be possible to dive rapidly as you travel from place to place. Take every opportunity to do this, as it can significantly extend your flight time! Just dive as steeply as you can, for as long as you can, to take advantage of this mechanic.
Method 2 – Water
Water will rapidly cool your engines, and all around the map are deep pools and lakes that you can dive into. You don’t lose much speed at all when you do this and can fly right back out again. I like to skim the surface of lakes, swiftly drop below the surface and come back out, then go back to flying.
There is another advantage to doing this. A full dunk into water will buy you some time where flying doesn’t build up the heat at all. Gaining altitude is usually the most heat intensive part of flying, so use this window to climb as high as you can, so that you can take advantage of the diving method next time you need to cool.
Finally, the spray from waterfalls will also cool your engines, so once you get comfortable in the air, you can use some fancy flying near them for some rapid cooling.
Method 3 – Gear
As you play the game, you will earn gear as mission rewards, and drops from enemies and chests. Some of this can be very useful in helping you fly for longer, so be sure to take a good look at it all. For example, the Heat Sink component will increase the amount of heat your thrusters can hold before you need to cool them down.
The real key to flying for longer is practice! Once you get used to diving, taking advantage of water, and making sure you have the right gear, you will be able to stay in the air for much longer!
