With recent reveals around how powerful the new PlayStation 5 from Sony will be, lots of people are wondering how much it might cost. With no formal announcement about a price having been made yet, we are left mainly to our own devices on this one. Mark Cerny, the lead architect of the upcoming console, has stated that he believes it will release at a price that will be appealing to gamers in light of its advanced feature set.

There is, however, a lot to consider when talking about how much that might be. The first factor is when the product makes it to the market. Generally speaking, the first entrant in the console market for each generation is the one setting the price. They will get to decide precisely how much of any manufacturer costs they are willing to eat, and later makeup in predicted software sales. After that comes the manufacturing prices of the unit itself.

How Much Will The PS5 Cost?

According to Pelham Smithers, MD of market research firm Pelham Smithers Associates, who specialize in the research of the Japanese manufacturing market, the PS5 could release for as low as $400. Leaks from unnamed devs have predicted a price point of $500, some $100 more expensive than the PS4 at launch. What is interesting about that leak is that it came out before Sony made any announcements about the PS5’s hardware and feature set, and they got a lot of those details correct. Even then, it is unlikely that Sony has shared a possible price with developers at this time, and the dev in question may just be making assumptions based on the features.

This all ties back to the first point about how much of the cost Sony are willing to absorb to move the console. For now, the easiest way to treat the potential price is to consider somewhere in the region of $450, right in the middle of both rumored prices.

Another critical thing to remember is that Sony already made an error during the PS3 generation about the launch price, releasing that console for a whopping $599 at the time. As such, it unlikely that they would make that same mistake again. Simply, put at the moment there are a lot of unknown factors about the PS5, so we will have to wait and see what future announcements come from Sony.
