Borderlands 3 Legendary Weapons Preview: Assault Rifles

With the new Borderlands game just around the corner, what Assault Rifles will you need to be truly legendary?

There’s less than a month to go before Borderlands 3 makes it anticipated return to the world of gaming, and when it does, you know that it’s going to reclaim its crown as the best FPS ever. Fans are salivating at the prospect of going toe to toe with a whole new cast of villains and monsters, as well as some somewhat familiar faces, as well as all of that lovely, lovely loot that the dead are always so happy to drop for you.

But to survive, you’re going to need guns, and lots of them. Borderlands weapons have always been one of the best parts of the franchise, ranging as they do from the ridiculous to the sublime and with the third game on the horizon it’s safe to say that they’ll be some brand new ways to kill folks mixed in with some old friends. So with that in mind, let’s take a preview look at all those wonderful toys that you can get to grips with on September 13th, and we shall start with everybody’s favorite way to rain down some death. The Assault Rifles.

Borderlands 3 – Assault Rifles Preview

Bearcat

Bearcat

Manufacturer: Torgue

Tag Line: I Love The Smell Of Popcorn In The Morning

Special Effect: Fires Three Grenades Per Shot

Everyone’s least favorite gun makes an unwelcome return in Borderlands 3. The consensus seems to be that the Bearcat is just straight up useless. You’d be better off just flogging it on as soon as you get your hands on it and if that’s what you plan to do, and I really wouldn’t blame you if you did, then the legendary version will net you a serious amount of cash.

Embrace The Pain

Embrace The Pain

Manufacturer: COV

Tag Line: It hurts. HAHAHAHAHA! IT HURTS!!!

Special Effect: No Fricking Idea

In the extensive research that I’ve done for this guide, yes I do actually do research and don’t just slap these things together in the hopes that something will stick, I’ve found bugger all information on this gun. Not even a picture of it. So it’s going to have to be a bit of guesswork from yours truly. It’s safe to say that as this is a reference Krieg, then you’d expect it to have a few of his traits. Though I’m not sure how happy I am with the thought of a psycho for a gun, and it may even be locked to the character, but outside of that, I know as much as you do.

Engulfing Super Shredder

Engulfing Super Shredder

Manufacturer: Vladof

Tag Line: Speed Kills

Special Effect: Fires Two Chaingun Barrels Simultaneously

In what seems to be an upgrade from the gun that has appeared in both Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, the Engulfing Super Shredder allows you to open up with both chaingun barrels at the same time. From what I’ve seen in videos on this here interweb the Engulfing Super Shredder is going to be quite a useful tool, especially when you find yourself taking on a herd of flesh-hungry dinosaurs. You’ll be cutting through those ugly bastards like a hot knife through butter.

Faisor

Faisor

Manufacturer: Vladof

Tag Line: N/A

Special Effect: Fires Bullets Of Radiation As Well As Explosive Balls Of Energy

Another new way of killing folks in Borderlands 3 is the Faisor. This bad boy/girl fires irradiated bullets at anything dumb enough to get caught in your crosshairs and rounds it all off by launching explosive energy balls at the dying fools. It also has a nifty bayonet attached to it for when you want to get up close and personal. Let’s hope it’s rusty as well.

Gatling Gun

Gatling Gun

Manufacturer: Jakobs

Tag Line: Watch Me Crank It, Watch Me Roll

Special Effect: Holding Down The Trigger Unleashes A Bullet Hell

Alright, you got me. That isn’t the legendary version of the Gatling Gun in the proceeding picture, but you get the idea. I, for one, am glad to see this weapon return as even though I try to use a sniper-rifle whenever and wherever possible on my journey’s. Sometimes a bloke needs to get all the frustration of the day out by opening-up with a hail of bullets, and there isn’t anything better in the Borderlands series for doing that then the good old Gatling Gun.

Laser-Sploder

Laser-Sploder

Manufacturer: Torgue

Tag Line: LASERS!=EXPLOSIONS!?

Special Effect: Fires Radiation Homing Explosives

This thing sounds as crazy as it, well, sounds, I suppose. A laser assault rifle that fires radiation powered homing explosives that deal even more damage over time when they hit their target? Where do I sign up for one of those?

Pain Is Power

Pain Is Power

Manufacturer: COV

Tag Line: Nobody Kills Me But ME!!!

Special Effect: A High Fire Rate But When It Over Heats You’re Going To Be The One Who Gets It

Again, not the right picture for the entry here but it seems as if Gearbox Software are keeping their cards close to their chest on the new weapons, so I have to use place holders for some of these. Which is a shame as the Pain Is Power assault rifle sounds like it’s going to be a real difficult weapon to get your head around. It has a very high rate of fire by all accounts, but the second that it starts to overheat it will start to drain your shield energy and life, instead of forcing the gun to jam up. So, one for the very careful of those among us to learn to master.

The Dictator

The Dictator

Manufacturer: Vladof

Tag Line: Suppress All Who Oppose You

Special Effect: Fires Horizontal Bullets As Fast As You Can Pull The Trigger

Proving once again that Gearbox Software is your mother and won’t let you look at your nice new shiny toys before Christmas Day, The Dictator falls into that category of doesn’t seem to exist out of the game, yet. But with a name like The Dictator, it’s going to be the kind of assault rifle that lets you pretty much run and gun while scaring the crap out of whatever is on the receiving end of your attempt to murder it.

The Ogre

The Ogre

Manufacturer: Vladof

Tag Line: Ogres Chew Their Food

Special Effect: It Fires Missiles

If the idea of an assault rifle that fires missiles as well doesn’t fill your heart with murderous glee, then I fear that the Borderlands franchise might not be for you. May I suggest you look elsewhere for your gaming entertainment? Perhaps Lee Carvallo’s Putting Challenge would be more to your taste? As for the rest of you bloodthirsty little monkeys, grab hold of The Ogre as soon as you can. Not only will you be able to explode people but you’ll, occasionally, be able to do it a lot faster than usual as long as the random speed up for fire rate and reload decides to land for you.

Sawbar

Sawbar

Manufacturer: COV

Tag Line: Suppressing Fires!!!

Special Effect: Unlimited Mag

Another returning franchise favorite, the Sawbar is the perfect definition of a love/hate weapon. Everyone loves it for the fact that it gives you unlimited firepower with a mag that never runs dry, but it does come with the side-effect of it overheating faster than my arse after a vindaloo. Still, if it didn’t, then you’d not need any other weapons in the game and where would the fun be in that?

Striking Warlord

Striking Warlord

Manufacturer: Dahl

Tag Line: My Gun Sings For Your Blood

Special Effect: 30% Chance It Won’t Use Any Of Your Valuable Ammo

Jeez, Gearbox Software? If I didn’t know any better, I’d swear you’re deliberately keeping all these new weapons under wraps to make my job more difficult. I’m watching you. Anyway, that aside, the Striking Warlord has a pretty good chance at not eating up all that valuable ammo that you’re going to need for the other assault rifles you’ll find yourself having to switch to when you have to melt someone’s face off. Which should come in handy.
