The Outer Worlds is a great open-world exploration game, with lovely RPG elements, and some great dialogue. It is also a first-person shooter, or a first-person melee game, depending on how you like to fight. As such, there is plenty of opportunity for death in the game. If you decide it is a bit too difficult, or too easy, you can change the difficulty setting while you play.

How To Change The Difficulty Setting In The Outer Worlds

When you first start playing The Outer Worlds, you will select the difficulty setting when you create your character. You will be able to choose from the below options. They can all be changed at any time, except for the Supernova difficulty. Only full playthroughs can be done on Supernova. You must pick it at the start of the game, and you cannot change it later.

  • Story – for people who are more interested in talking than fight
  • Normal – exactly what you think, the way the game is meant to be played
  • Hard – enemies take more damage and hit harder
  • Supernova – Introduces survival elements, companions can die, and enemies hit like trucks

To change the difficulty (except for Supernova playthroughs), follow the below steps at any time:

  • Go to the main menu by hitting Esc on PC, Options on PS4, or Menu on Xbox One
  • Go to Settings
  • Go to Gameplay
  • The first option in this tab will allow you to change the difficulty

Remember, you can change the difficulty as often as you like, whenever you like, so if you run into a fight that is just causing you all sorts of headaches, you can make the game a little easier to help you get through it, then switch back to your old difficulty setting again.
