PS VITA and PSP sales forecast cut by Sony from 16 million to 7 million
Sony has just few minutes ago released their Q3 earnings reports giving consumers an updated look at sales of PS VITA and PSP. The disappointing news is that Sony has once again provided the combined sales figure of PSP and PS VITA, and not exact PS Vita sale figure.
As per the details revealed, Sony sold a combined total of 5.7 million handhelds during April 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012. During this same time period, Sony sold a total of 23.4 million units of software across both PSP and PS VITA.
Furthermore, Sony has cut sales forecast of both PSP and PS VITA drastically. The firm initially hoped to sell 16 million PSP and PS Vita during the fiscal year, and now Sony has reduced this sales forecast to 7 million.
In a statement to press, Sony said, "In the digital imaging and the game businesses, which are positioned as core areas of the electronics businesses along with the mobile businesses, the shrinking market for compact digital cameras, due to the expansion of the smartphone market, and the slow penetration of the PlayStation Vita portable entertainment platform are recognized as particularly important issues. Sony is working to improve profitability through reinforcement of its high value added products that are differentiated by the use of highly competitive image sensors developed by Sony. In the game business, Sony is working to expand sales and operating income through the introduction of an attractive software lineup and through offering game software on mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets."
Sony also posted a operating profit of 46.4 billion yen ($496 million) as compared to 91.7 billion yen loss a year ago.
