Difference Between Xbox Scorpio Native 4K And PS4 Pro Checkerboard Rendering Not So Sharp: Dev

Xbox Scorpio vs PS4 Pro: Difference Between 4K vs Checkerboard 4K

Battle Chasers Director and Vigil games Co-Founder Ryan Stefanelli provided his opinion about Project Scorpio, and what is possibly going to be the difference between the upcoming Microsoft console and PlayStation 4 Pro when it comes to taking a stand on 4K screens. According to Stefanelli, that difference is not set to be huge.

Xbox Scorpio vs PS4 Pro: Difference Between 4K vs Checkerboard 4K

"The difference is that the 4K rendered output will look very crisp and smooth while the checkerboard technique will not look as sharp when directly compared but this depends also on the quality and size of the screen/TV," he told GamingBolt.

"From a development perspective, the checkerboard technique is a bit harder to implement as it is a custom implementation while a native 4k resolution is just a higher frame output resolution. In our situation Unity takes care of it anyways."

Interestingly, I think Stefanelli is right -- Microsoft is set to have lots of problems, in my opinion, when it comes to market Project Scorpio and its 'native 4K'. I don't believe many of the gamers out there can tell the difference between upscaled 4K and native 4K, and Sony did it right offering that checkerboard rendering solution with a less expensive hardware.
PS4 Pro/Project Scorpio: Console limitations

Talking about video games consoles limitations, he said that in his opinion now it still is a matter of CPU/GPU. We'll need to see whether Project Scorpio is set to be the first console to work around such limitations, or we're still going to see such statements coming, as it happened in the last few years, from developers.

"It's still both the CPU and the GPU. With the PS4 Pro's GPU we can't offer native 4K rendering which is easy to achieve on good desktop GPUs nowadays."
