ND On Why The Last of Us: Part II Full Production Not Started Yet, New Project Announcement & More
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy recently achieved GOLD Status i.e. all development work on the game was completed, which meant that The Last of Us: Part II is the only game that is currently in development at the studio. We have seen in the recent past that Naughty Dog has handheld multiple projects at one time and this has lead to a query: Is there any other project that Naughty Dog has taken up after completing Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and are working on it alongside The Last of Us: Part II? Naughty Dog Community Manager Arne Meyer and The Lost Legacy Creative Director Shaun Escayg in a recent interview with Daily Star replied to the query and explained in detail what exactly is the situation at Naughty Dog (currently).
On the topic of what is coming next from Naughty Dog after The Last of Us: Part II? Arne replied that The Last of Us sequel is not yet in full production. The studio will be able to decide on the next Project once the full production of TLOU Part II starts.
“So, we can pretty much say the whole studio will be focussed on The Last of Us Part Two once this is over. At some point, parts of the team that will try to figure out what’s next and how that goes when The Last of Us Part Two is full production.”
Arne further added that although Naughty Dog recently shifted towards TWO Development Team set-up, that hasn't helped in any way because the workload increased, many developers went straight from The Last of Us part I to Uncharted 4, then straight to Uncharted 4, then straight to The Lost Legacy. There are a lot of guys at the studio who needs a break. This is a clear indication that the full production of The Last of Us: Part II is not going to start anytime soon.
"A lot of people went straight from The Last of Us, straight into Uncharted 4, straight into Lost Legacy and those guys need a vacation." said Meyer.
Meyer then went on to explain what exactly is the current situation at Naughty Dog and when exactly the studio is going to think about the next project after The Last of Us: Part II.
"We started really early on with The Last of Us Part Two it’ll take a while for people in the studio to figure out what’s next, where do we go next and which projects we want to think about … so, if you’re holding out for UnKarted you could be waiting some time."
So there you have it, folks, don't expect new project announcement from Naughty Dog anytime soon. Also, the development work on The Last of Us: Part II is still in an early stage of development, a major reason why Naughty Dog hasn't committed a release window for it yet.
The Last of Us: Part II was announced at PlayStation Experience 2016. The debut trailer confirmed the return of Joel and Ellie. This time around players will take on the role of Ellie, story is set 5 years after the first game and is reported to be set in Seattle (Washington).
