Battlefront II Hero Unlock Controversy: EA's Reply Becomes Most Downvoted Comment On Reddit

Microtransactions in Star Wars: Battlefront II has been a hot topic of discussion since the release of beta - LOOT BOX model introduced in Battlefront II was one of the main reasons behind the backlash of fans at the time of OPEN and CLOSED BETA, but it was not that big because DICE covered two major demands of the fans in Battlefront II - addition of single-player campaign and future playable content including maps, heroes, and missions are going to be available for a free of cost.

FREE OF COST? When the name of the publisher is Electronic Arts never expect the implementation of things to be as simple as it reads. In a recent blog post, DICE and Electronic Arts detailed what exactly is that CAVEAT behind the upcoming free content for Battlefront II - they are LOCKED BEHIND In-game Credits. You can read the Caveat below.

"Your favorite stormtrooper-turned-hero Finn joins the fight for the Resistance and Captain Phasma steps on to the Battlefront for the First Order. They can be purchased with in-game Credits from that week."

This simply means - Finn and Phasma are going to be available in Star Wars: Battlefront II for free, but still players will have to unlock them in the game via in-game credits and this is where things get interesting - A user on Reddit name "TheHotterPotato" did a bit of research on "How Much Time You Need To Spend Playing Battlefront II To Unlock ONE Hero", an example taken in to this R&D was that of Luke and Vader - players can add them to their roster for 60000 Credits each.

As per the details shared by Reddit user "TheHotterPotato", it takes 40 Hours to unlock a hero - and to prove his point he went on to share a spreadsheet and Galatic Assault Statistics. You can check out the spreadsheet here and the full Report Analysis below.

"Hello again! Since EA and DICE have decided to move SWBF2 to a "credits earned based on time played" rather than the old system of awarding you based on score earned in a match, I thought I would do an analysis of my time spent playing the Galactic Assault mode during the EA Access period. Please note that credits earned in challenges are not factored into these numbers.

While I was playing, I started a timer as soon as the match started and the opening shot pans down to my character. I stopped the timer on the Victory or Defeat screen. This spreadsheet and subsequent stats are based on minutes of actual gameplay, no loading times or time spent fuddling around in menus is factored in because many people are playing on many different machines and platforms. Here are some interesting stats I have found from my Galactic Assault matches so far (keep in mind these are the statistics at the time of writing up this post. I will continue to enter my matches as I play them so the exact values may change a bit):

  • Average Galactic Assault Match Length: 11:09 - In my opinion, this needs to increase by at least a factor of two, maybe more.
  • Average Credits per Match: 275 - Far too low, we will get into that in a moment.
  • Average Credits per Minute of Gameplay: 25.04 - At first it sounds reasonable...
  • Gameplay Minutes Required to Earn a Trooper Crate (4000): 159.73 - Almost 3 hours of gameplay required to earn a trooper crate at the current rate. I understand these values don't include what you earn in challenges, but I am mainly doing this to figure out what it's going to be like after the first week and I am done chasing the easy challenges and start playing the way I enjoy. 3 hours is far, far too much of a time requirement.
  • Gameplay Minutes Required to Unlock One Hero: 2,395.97 - You read that correctly. At the current price of 60,000 credits, it will take you 40 hours of gameplay time to earn the right to unlock one hero or villain. That means 40 hours of saving each and every credit, no buying any crates at all, so no bonus credits for getting duplicates in crates.

The spreadsheet also includes estimates for the amount of time it will take to earn uncommon and rare cards based on the Gamespot crate opening statistics, but the drop rates have not been tested enough for me to include them there. But I do think it's scary that it could potentially take someone over 20 hours of gameplay to earn enough Crafting Parts to make an Epic tier Star Card. All I can say is that I hope these numbers are just for EA Access. If these are the final numbers for release DICE is going to have a hard time justifying this to the fanbase.

TheHotterPotato didn't stop here - he went on to make another Spreadsheet detailing the total number of Credits a Battlefront II player can earn from challenges - to my surprise the figure came at 32,400 Credits ONLY. You guys can check out the spreadsheet here - it details ALL of the Credits, Crafting Parts, Crystals, and Crates Battlefront II player can earn by completing the Challenges.

  • You get a total of 32,400 Credits by completing every single Challenge in the game. Currently, this is enough to make it halfway to buying a hero like Luke or Vader, and most of the way to buy a hero like Leia, Chewbacca or Palpatine. This is more than enough credits to get you, Iden, though!
  • You get a total of 1,275 Crafting Parts by completing all Challenges in the game. This is ALMOST enough for you to craft 3 Star Cards from Rare to Epic (a cost of 480 Crafting Parts)
  • You get a total of 1,035 Crystals by completing all Challenges in the game. This is enough Crystals to get you just over 5 Trooper Crates.
  • You get a total of 23 Crates by completing all Challenges in the game. Now these range from Veteran Class Crates to Crates that give you Uncommon versions of specific Star Cards after you complete a Challenge for them. We don't have enough info on these crates to know how many Credits or Crafting Parts are inside of them at the moment. But I am more than happy to add that info to this spreadsheet once we have it all verified in the hopes that it isn't randomized.

Keep in mind, some of these Challenges require SIGNIFICANT time to complete like 500 kills using a certain Class or completing objectives with Hero Ships in Starfighter Mode. Other Challenges actually require you to have Luke or Vader unlocked to complete them, so you would already need to spend 60,000 Credits to start to complete them."

Both these post of TheHotterPotato immediately went viral on Reddit, and the message reached at Electronic Arts loud and clear, and this is how an EACommunityTeam defended the decision via Reddit - "The intent is to provide players a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking different heroes."

As for cost, we selected initial values based upon data from the Open Beta and other adjustments made to milestone rewards before launch. Among other things, we're looking at average per-player credit earn rates on a daily basis, and we'll be making constant adjustments to ensure that players have challenges that are compelling, rewarding, and of course attainable via gameplay.

We appreciate the candid feedback, and the passion the community has put forth around the current topics here on Reddit, our forums and across numerous social media outlets. Our team will continue to make changes and monitor community feedback and update everyone as soon and as often as we can."

Guess what the clarification didn't go down too well with Battlefront II Reddit Community and they responded it in the best possible manner - DOWNVOTING the reply from EACommunityTeam - it has received (Minus) -88.K downvotes (at the time of writing this). I tell how significant this -88.8K figure is: at -12000 it became the 3rd most downvoted comment in history, now this figure has reached 88.8K and is still counting which means - it is very close to becoming the Most DOWNVOTED comment in Reddit history.

I hope Electronic Arts and DICE learns a lesson from this outrage and fix this issue in Star Wars: Battlefront II as soon as possible. The damage is already done that too just a few days ahead of the launch. It is now in the hands of EA and DICE how soon can they bring the damage down and listen to the feedbacks from Star Wars Battlefront community.
