Payday 2 Nintendo Switch Version Suffers Severe Frame Rate/Pacing Issues

PayDay 2 Nintendo Switch Performance Analysis

When a port from other platforms releases on Nintendo Switch, we're always curious to see how good it performs, and how it looks in comparison with those other consoles and PC. With Payday 2 just released, it was obvious we were waiting for some tech analysis to check it out.

PayDay 2 Nintendo Switch Performance Analysis

In terms of resolutions, it's 900p in the docked mode and 720 in the handheld mode, similarly to what we've seen and played so far on Nintendo's hybrid console. Texture filtering quality is close to PS4 (trilinear) but not to Xbox One (16x anisotropic), while their resolution and shadows are lower.

The developer has also removed effects like bloom and chromatic aberration and wasn't able to fix frame rate issues other console versions already had. The fps counter is constantly between 20 and 30 frames per second, but as the game speed is connected to them it's even more noticeable than it should.

When the game drops, it runs at 66% the speed it is meant to run, and at times there's a 16,7% spike that contributes to making the performance often inconsistent. The situation, as for the graphics (except the resolution, of course), it's the same between handheld and docked modes.

Payday 2 is now available for Nintendo Switch after it already released for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
