Mario is No Longer a Plumber, Nintendo Reveals

Bad news for plumbers around the world: Their most iconic symbol has retired. Nintendo of Japan reports that Mario is no longer a plumber.

Over on Japan's Mario Portal, a Japanese bio for Mario reports that the Nintendo mascot is no longer plumbing. A translation from Kotaku reveals a bit more information:

All around sporty, whether it’s tennis or baseball, soccer or car racing, he [Mario] does everything cool. As a matter of fact, he also seems to have worked as a plumber a long time ago...

So it's official. Mario "seems to have worked as a plumber" back in the day, but these days he no longer participates in his toilet-plunging past. Then again, that does sound pretty accurate. Nintendo has yet to release a Mario game focused on fixing sinks.

Still, fans took to Twitter to comment on the news. Some were devastated by the announcement.

But others accepted the reality a long time ago, pointing out that Mario really hasn't been plumbing since he landed in the Mushroom Kingdom.

Mario may not be unclogging Wario's toilet any time soon, but he still has a busy year ahead. Super Mario Odyssey launches this October, serving as Mario's official debut onto the Nintendo Switch. Fans are hopeful about the game, as are critics. Odyssey previously sweeped at this year's gamescom awards, scoring the show's "best of" title.
