Splatoon 2 has been out for the Nintendo Switch since July 2017, and in less than one year, it’s already outsold some of its biggest competitors. After an eight-year long streak, Splatoon 2 is the first console game to break two million sales in Japan.

Splatoon 2 has sold 1,882,997 million physical copies in Japan since it first came out, with an additional 150,617 digital sales, according to lifetime sales statistics supplied by Famitsu. In total, that means Japanese shoppers have bought 2,033,614 copies of Splatoon 2 since the game first came out. In comparison, Super Mario Odyssey has sold just over 1.5 million, with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild clocking in at a little over 780,000 sales.

Splatoon 2 is one title that most Switch owners most likely own, too. Media Create’s statistics reveal just over 3.4 million Nintendo Switch units have been purchased in Japan since the console first launched. So compared to the two million Splatoon 2 copies bought in Japan, Famitsu and Media Create’s statistics suggest over half of all Nintendo Switch owners have purchased Splatoon 2, making it an extremely popular game with the console’s Japanese userbase.

It’s unclear if another Switch game will sell over two million units in the coming months ahead. But based on Super Mario Odyssey’s success within Japan, Nintendo’s latest Super Mario title may be next. In the meantime, Splatoon 2’s new Rgame mode Clam Blitz is now live, letting players fight against one another by filling each other’s baskets with clams.
