Yuki Naka, known primarily as the creator of Sonic the Hedgehog, has struck out on a new venture, and it involves working with a company you may not have expected. Today, Naka tweeted about his newest gig, explaining that he has officially joined Square Enix and “strives to develop games” at the company.

Today, Naka tweeted about his newest gig, explaining that he has officially joined Square Enix and “strives to develop games” at the company.
“I aim to develop an enjoyable game, please look forward to it,” his tweet said. He didn’t go into further detail about what kind of project he might be assigned to. But it’s an intriguing move, and more than a little perplexing. Previously, his own studio Prope worked on the decent Rodea the Sky Soldier in 2015, which launched on Wii U and 3DS. Since then, we’ve heard nary a peep from the studio, which was founded in 2006.
Prope also released the bizarre Let’s Tap, which required the use of a flat surface or even the game’s box as well as foldout cardboard boxes to help facilitate making a flat area. Perhaps Naka and his crew had an inkling for what players would eventually love to see on the Switch and the innovative creations that would be made for it. Last week, Nintendo announced Switch’s Labo and its own cacophony of cardboard goodies you can use to create your own “toys” like RC cars and robots. It’s a far cry from tapping on a flat surface, but you get the picture.
Naka will surely bring some interesting ideas to the table during his tenure with Square Enix, so we’ll keep an eye out for anything he may be attached to going forward. Could we see something Sonic Team-related in a future Final Fantasy?
Probably not, but that sure would be cool. NiGHTS would be an excellent addition to any of the games. Fight me.
