Bandai Namco has revealed the major differences between the original Dark Souls and its upcoming remaster, Dark Souls Remastered.

The remaster will have vast technical improvements over the original game with 4K support for Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro. On PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch, the game will have a resolution of 1080p while the Switch version will drop down to 720p when in handheld mode. The Switch version will also run at 30 frames per second (fps) instead of the standard 60fps.

Dark Souls Remastered will also add button configuration, giving players the option to change their layout to suit their playstyle. Button configuration was one of the original game’s common complaints, so it’s good to see Bandai Namco adding the feature into the remastered version after all these years.

The game will introduce vast changes to multiplayer, with the maximum number of players increased from four to six. Password matchmaking will also be available, similar to Dark Souls 3, to guarantee you a game with friends instead of random players.

Healing items will not be available in online matches with the exception of Estus Flasks, to prevent battles from being too long and drawn out. Players will also be unable to summon ally phantoms when in combat against enemy phantoms.

In addition, a new Arena mode has been added to the game. Arena is the name for Dark Souls Remastered’s 6-player, three-vs-three deathmatch mode. Players will be spawned at random locations across a map and have to find and kill the opposing players to win the match. These matches can also be password protected.
