Deus Ex is “not dead,” Eidos Montreal studio lead stresses

Eidos Montreal has not killed off Deus Ex, studio head David Anfossi stressed to PCGamesN. Rather, the studio is simply too busy to create a new game in the series right now.

Don’t worry, Deus Ex fans. Square Enix’s cyberpunk ARPG first-person shooter series isn’t dead, it’s just on the backburner, Eidos Montreal’s studio lead explained in an interview with PCGamesN.

David Anfossi explained to the gaming website that the Canadian development team is busy working on Shadow of the Tomb Raider, a video game based on Marvel’s The Avengers, and an unannounced third title, so there just isn’t enough time to create a Deus Ex game quite yet.

Deus Ex is not dead, I confirm that,” Anfossi said to PCGamesN. “Deus Ex, of course, it’s the brand of the studio. We are all attached to this franchise, but we cannot do everything, you know?”

Eidos Montreal is owned by Square Enix Europe, a subsidiary within Japanese publisher and developer Square Enix. The studio’s third game remains unknown, although speculation remains as lively as ever. Alongside The Avengers, Eidos Montreal is supposedly working on a game dedicated to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, sources told Kotaku earlier last year.

Nothing official has been confirmed yet, although Anfossi stressed to PCGamesN that Eidos Montreal isn’t planning to expand on its reboot for the stealth video game series Thief.

“So I should be clear with Thief, in the sense that for the moment there is no plans around that franchise,” Anfossi said. “You know we have three productions and developments here. We are a big studio, but we have […] we like to focus on things we do and do it correctly.”

It’s unclear what Eidos Montreal had in store for the world, but fans may learn more by next month, when Square Enix hosts its press conference during E3 2018. In the meantime, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is slated for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on Sept. 14, 2018.
