E3 is a beautiful thing. For gamers, it’s sort of like a holiday in the middle of the year. All of the new and upcoming games and tech are shown off and everyone gets hyped and excited about what’s to come.

But arguably one of the best parts about E3 is the surprises. Many games announce their presence at E3 ahead of time, so you know to expect their arrival. Many companies, however, wait in silence and unleash their titles on unsuspecting crowds to make for some of the best moments each year.

Let’s take a look at some of the best surprise moments from this year’s E3.

Resident Evil 2 Remake

Announced two years ago, a remake of the 1998 PlayStation 1 classic Resident Evil 2 has been in the pipeline for some time now. But since that initial announcement, nothing was seen or heard about the game since then, leading fans of the series to wonder what had happened.

Well, it’s coming. Resident Evil 2 made its first appearance at Sony’s press conference, and it even has a confirmed release date. The remake will release on Jan. 25, 2019.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has everyone

Super Smash. Bros was confirmed to be coming to the Switch a few months ago, but little else was known. The biggest surprise about the new title, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, is that it will include every character from every Smash game, ever. That’s at least 64 characters to unlock and play as.

Bethesda’s two future games

While Fallout 76 was announced before the show, Bethesda fans were wondering what else the publisher would have to show off at this year’s E3. On top of an Elder Scrolls mobile game, Todd Howard teased long into the future of the next two huge titles from Bethesda, Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI.

Devil May Cry 5

Another long-awaited Capcom title, Devil May Cry 5 made a surprise appearance at the Xbox conference. It’s been 10 years since Devil May Cry 4, and this game is a direct sequel to that adventure, having nothing to do with the recent DmC: Devil May Cry reboot from 2013.

Jump Force

A fighting game starring some of the heaviest hitters in anime made its debut during the Xbox conference, and anime fans around the world jumped for joy. Jump Force features characters from series like Dragon Ball Z, Death Note, and more.

Three new Gears of War games

Microsoft made waves by confirming that not only is Gears of War 5 coming, but two more Gears titles are in development as well. Gears Pop! features Funko Pop! figures and Gears of War Tactics features an XCOM-like strategy style.

Cyberpunk 2077 is first-person

CD Projekt Red’s next franchise was first revealed four years ago, but went dark shortly after. To close out the Xbox show, a brand-new trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 revealed an incredible look at what’s to come.

But one of the biggest surprises about the game came out later in the show once the developer showed off a gameplay demo, revealing that it is a first-person RPG. It’s a surprise for many, considering The Witcher series was third-person, but judgment will need to be reserved for whenever the gameplay goes public.
