It is the end of the year, which means a lot of posts talking about various data points of the previous year. Steam have joined in the fun by releasing information on their Best Selling and Most Played games of the year.

Steam Best Selling Games 2018

The Top Sellers list won’t be all that much of a shock, but does still make for some interesting viewing. The big hitters like Assassin’s Creed, CSGO and Monster Hunter are all there, as you would expect. Warframe also makes an appearance, which heavily imply that the games recent excursions into large open world areas is helping to bring in new players.

You can also play a fun game by comparing how games sold with their current discounts. There might be an interesting tale behind Jurassic World Evolution selling well enough to get into the Gold tier of games, but currently having a 75% discount on the store. Perhaps those early sales slowed down considerably?

The Most Played category is also very interesting, with Steam stalwarts Team Fortress 2 and Dota 2 leading the way for games that managed to get over one hundred thousand simultaneous players. Also in this list are Monster Hunter World, Warframe, PUBG and, somewhat surprisingly, Realm Royale.

Civilization V shows that it continues to be one of the finest games ever to grace our PCs, as it managed to rack up over fifty thousand simultaneous players. Joining it are Football Manager 2019, Far Cry 5 and Subnautica.

Kingdom Come Deliverance managed to make it into this category as well, highlight the massive success of the game.

VR showed itself to be an interesting, and open, market, with indie darlings like Gorn and Beat Saber managing to join Skyrim and Fallout 4 VR in the rankings. I find this to be a good indicator of just how strange the VR market can be, with a small user base being so reachable and hungry for new games that indie developers can match some of the industries largest developers.

Make sure you take a good look at the lists yourself, it makes for some very interesting reading for those who are interested.
