Red Hook Studios announce a sequel to their dark dungeon crawler adventure, Darkest Dungeon
Red Hook Studios is planning a sequel to Darkest Dungeon, the company announced today. The first game was a dark twist on the traditional dungeon crawler genre where players had to manage their party’s sanity while in a dungeon and their need to sin upon their return.
So far there are limited details. Red Hook did release this brief announcement trailer from their Twitter page.

What We Know
While Red Hook has not given too many details about what to expect, PC Gamer had the opportunity to sit down with the company’s creative director Chris Bourassa and co-president Tyler Sigman for an exclusive interview. You can read the full exchange here.
The biggest takeaway from the interview is that Darkest Dungeon 2 will have feature an updated, familiar combat system for those who played the first title. When PC Gamer asked about how the combat system was going to work, Bourassa and Sigman kept their lips sealed.
“We’re playing this pretty close to the chest!” the said. “Our combat system is making a return, but we’re giving it a significant tune-up—mechanically, and in terms of presentation. Most significantly, however, we are working with a completely different metagame structure. Darkest Dungeon II is a game about enduring a grueling journey, not cleaning up your backyard.”
For those who didn’t play the first Darkest Dungeon, the plot is based around a player’s ancestor passing down their estate to them. You arrive at the town of Hamlet, which serves as the game’s hub where you steadily unlock sections of the city and receive various upgrades. You hire infamous adventurers who come with their own problems the player must micromanage while in a dungeon, and back at town. It turns out the ancestor had dug deep into the mines of the land, unearthing chaotic, eldritch powers that now infest the entire countryside of the area. The player must take their party to each of the infect areas, different the three bosses residing there, and then advance on to the infamous Darkest Dungeon deep below the estate.
The first Darkest Dungeon received three DLC titles, the latest of these, The Color of Madness, released last June.
The two studio heads also shared they plan to have Darkest Dungeon 2 out on early access first so that players can get an idea of the new game and their team can receive feedback early.
