Cyberpunk 2077 Leak Hints at Current-Gen Release, Standard Edition Bonuses

A leaked image appears to show Cyberpunk 2077’s box art and the contents of its Standard Edition, as well as hinting at a release on current-gen consoles.

As E3 2019 closes in, we’re starting to wonder if there will be anything left to reveal on the show floor. If a Resetera post is to be believed, we just got a look at Cyberpunk 2077’s impressive Standard Edition, and its significantly less impressive box art.

The leaker claims to have received a Polish marketing image showing the contents of the Standard Edition, along with the package’s cover. Another interesting detail: the boxes shown are for the PS4 and Xbox One. Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the game will be released for those consoles. We don’t know exactly what next-gen game packaging will look like, so if this image wasn’t intended to be released to the public, they could just be placeholders. But, if the image is legit, it certainly looks like it was meant to be shown to the public, making a current-gen release likely, but not confirmed.

Those Xbox One and PS4 logos are far from the only interesting tidbit in the leak, though. It also suggests that Cyberpunk 2077 will come with a bounty of bonuses. The image shows a map and postcard of Night City, the game’s soundtrack, a mini art book, a couple of stickers, and a rulebook for Cyberpunk 2020, the tabletop game that inspired Cyberpunk 2077.

That may seem like a lot to come packed with a game’s Standard Edition, but remember, The Witcher 3 had a similar amount of extras packed in. We would also expect a Collector’s Edition to come with even more lavish extras. The Witcher 3 Collector’s Edition, for instance, included a Witcher medallion, a massive art book, and a statuette of Geralt dramatically winding up to bash a Griffin in the head.

So, the good news, if the leak is true, is that Cyberpunk 2077 players will get a bunch of cool extras even if they don’t shell out for the Collector’s Edition, and they may even be able to play on current hardware. The bad news is that the cover art looks about as uninspired as they come. It follows the ever-popular trend of a boring dude looking out of frame while holding a gun.

Again, if we’re looking for precedent, The Witcher 3 had very similar cover art, just with a sword in place of a gun. At least this time the background is bright yellow instead of plain white!

There’s still no release date, but if the marketing machine is this far along, we may be looking at a 2020 release. We wouldn’t read too much into the game being packaged with the Cyberpunk 2020 rulebook, though the serendipity of a 2020 release date would certainly be a marketing boon for CD Projekt Red. Perhaps we’ll find out more at Microsoft’s E3 press conference on Sunday.
