There’s been quite a several rumors around Project Scarlett, the next-gen Xbox, possibly not featuring optical drives when it releases in the holiday season of 2020. During an interview with Eurogamer, the head of Xbox Game Studios has debunked all of them in a single phrase.
“Yes, Scarlett will have an optical disc drive,” Matt Booty claimed at the end of an interview with Eurogamer. “I still have films at home on physical media – not many, but a few of my favourites. We know people have an attachment to buying games on disc, to building a collection.”
So, despite releasing a disc-less Xbox One S a few weeks ago, Microsoft still cares a lot about discs and people caring about discs, and it has no intention to disappoint them when the next-gen Xbox console releases further into 2020. We’re not told what kind of optical drive it’ll be, though.
This is going to happen despite the focus on Xbox Game Pass, which is a huge digital library of games coming both on day one for first party and a bunch of ID@Xbox indie titles, and further down the line when it comes to the third party productions.
In case you’re wondering, yes — Microsoft provided the first technical details about Project Scarlett last night at the Xbox E3 2019 media briefing, detailing that the platform is featuring an SSD and will be four times more powerful than the most powerful console around now, Xbox One X (6 teraflops).
