Today’s E3 Nintendo Direct was packed with exciting reveals, and the news about Animal Crossing: New Horizons gave even The Legend of Zelda announcements a run for their money. The reveals continued with show floor coverage after the Direct, including lots of new gameplay details. One reveal that may sound small but is actually a huge deal for fans is that you can now place furniture outside of your character’s home for the first time in the series.

The Animal Crossing franchise has always been known for allowing players to customize their town, and the new entry in the series is taking things a step further. From the footage we’ve seen so far, Animal Crossing: New Horizons put a lot of emphasis on what goes on outside of your home. When you show up in your new town, you can pitch a tent and decorate your campsite with new items.

Animal Crossing games have always let you roam around on the beach on the edge of town, but today’s Nintendo Direct put a lot of attention on that area, even opening on a shot of a character walking on the sand. Later, we saw the same character lay out a blanket and set up a spot for a bonfire.

By focusing on areas outside of your house, Animal Crossing: New Horizons will let you do much more to make your town your own than previous games in the series. As it was recently announced that New Horizons will feature a much more robust multiplayer mode than has ever appeared in the series before, allowing players to build outside will also let them build communal spaces to hang out with their friends on their island.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons was first expected to launch later this year, but the Nintendo Direct also announced that its release date has been pushed back. You’ll be able to dive into Animal Crossing: New Horizons starting March 20, 2020.
