As you might’ve learned at E3 2019, Nintendo is adding a brand new feature in the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening for the Nintendo Switch. In it, players are going to have the chance to create brand new dungeons to play in and share with their friends on Nintendo’s online network.
Given Nintendo’s extensive background and success with the Mario Maker video game, the concept makes a great deal of sense. For those who don’t know, Mario Maker is an entire game devoted to players constructing Mario levels that they then share with others to see how well they can handle their customized challenges. There’s a sequel coming out, Super Mario Maker 2, on June 28, that’s going to include a story mode.
Kotaku spoke with Eiji Aonuma, producer of the series, and asked him if Nintendo had any plans to bring this dungeon-maker mechanic to its own video game, much like Mario Maker. Aonuma provided Kotaku with a proper response, though he did not guarantee anything.
“Everything’s case by case; each title’s a little bit different. There could be times where we start with the idea of “let’s make a remake,” and then add new elements,” Aonuma said. “Or if we’re creating a sequel, sometimes it could be that there’s something that would be fitting for a sequel versus a remake or something else. Again, it’s case by case.”
Nintendo is not ruling out this possibility for the brand, although it might take a while: Link’s Awakening is releasing this year. Not to mention Nintendo announced a sequel to the latest standalone Zelda title, Breath of the Wild, during their conference at this year’s E3. If Nintendo does move forward with the concept and turn the dungeon-maker mechanic into its own game, it won’t be for awhile.
