Nintendo Plans On Extending Online Service With Classic Games Instead Of Mini Consoles

Nintendo shared more information about its strategy for the classic portfolio of content it plans to release. Nintendo admitted that instead of going for another ‘mini’ console like the NES and the SNES latest models, it plans to implement the games directly to its online services.

The discussion about this strategy came up during the latest meeting with investors. From there, those present discussed how they were thinking about adding games from more platforms to the Nintendo Switch Online subscription. These details were a rumor a few months ago.

At the time being, the subscription-only covers NES titles, which means there’s a lot of potential going to waste for the moment. Nintendo had once been adamant in adding more platforms as it was thinking about releasing other mini consoles, but maybe now it has made up its mind.

“At this place we cannot tell new information about future classic hardware among others, but we are thinking about providing an extension of the online service which is currently providing Famicom [NES] software, as well as other methods of providing them,” Nintendo said. “We also recognize that there are opinions wanting to play past titles.”

It’s worth noting this is a significant shift in strategy for Nintendo. The change in Nintendo’s approach may lie in the success of the NES and SNES Mini. By adding classic games to the Switch, it could increase the value of the console rather than forcing fans to purchase a brand new device for their home.

We’ll see how the situation evolves over the next few months. While SNES games were almost a given to be coming on Nintendo Switch Online, at this stage, we can’t rule out the possibility that Nintendo 64 or the Game Boy titles will get Mini re-release. Although, these games might come to the Switch’s online services instead.
