The Cuphead Show has just been announced, an animated series airing on Netflix, inspired by the PC, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One game from Studio MDHR. It will be based on the much-appreciated run ‘n’ gun platform title but won’t re-tell the story we’ve already explored in there.

“The character-driven comedy follows the unique misadventures of the impulsive Cuphead and his cautious but easily swayed brother Mugman,” says the press release issued by Netflix. “Through their many misadventures across their surreal home of the Inkwell Isles, they’ve always got one another’s backs.”

Netflix Animation will produce the series, which will be executive produced by Emmy and Annie award winner Dave Wasson, while Cosmo Segurson will be the co-executive producer. C.J. Kettler for King Features Syndicate and Chad and Jared Moldenhauer for Studio MDHR will also be executive producers.

Jared and Chad Moldenhauer, creators of the game, have provided more details via a quick phone interview with IGN and shared some exciting pieces of information like those about the story we’ve just mentioned.

“That is something we don’t quite know just yet. But we do know that we are not going to re-tell the game. This is going to explore other things and not just [Don’t Deal With the Devil],” Jared said. “The game told its story. The cartoon will tell its [own].”

As for the tone of the show, you can expect it to be safe for kids but also offering something to the more mature audience which has discovered the intellectual property on PC and Xbox One back in the days of its original release.

“It’s safe for kids, but written, so there are also things that adults find funny and appeals to a wider audience,” added Chad Moldenhauer. “It’s not a toddler show or a little kids cartoon. It’s safe to say that [the showrunners are] aiming for the same kind of vibe that the game hints at. They’ll be taking that idea and expanding it.”

On top of that, we do know that The Cuphead Show is not in the making at Studio MDHR directly but will be crafted by the internal studio at Netflix. It has no release date, but it shouldn’t take ages considering the pace of Netflix original releases. A DLC for the core game is also in the works and has been recently delayed to 2020.
