In an interview with VG247, Stefanie Joosten shared some more fond memories about working with Hideo Kojima on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. It’s the last title in the franchise crafted by its creator before the dramatic split from publisher and IP owner Konami.

Joosten said she ended up having a close relationship with Kojima thanks to the fact that she was one of the few in the crew to fluently speak Japanese. She spent several years in Japan despite being from the Netherlands due to her university’s cultural exchange plan.

The actress talked about the infamous dancing scene involving her character Quiet. Too many felt like a cheap effort to offer some fanservice despite her having a deep backstory.

“At first, the way it was written in the script, I didn’t really understand it very well, but during rehearsals, Mr. Kojima really explained it to me really well, and what way I should portray it,” Joosten said. “For him, it was a really deep scene. It was about Quiet constantly being bullied at Mother Base. The situation she was in, it was actually really hard for her not being able to speak, and feeling so isolated, and not feeling accepted.”

“And it was at that time when it’s raining, and nobody’s outside, she was with Venom Snake, who was the only person that she was able to trust at that point,” Joosten added. “It’s her having a moment of finally feeling free for just a moment. It’s just her enjoying the moment, and feeling that freedom, and really bonding with Snake. I thought that was really beautiful, actually.”

Also, the actress believes that the sexually charged moves Quiet do on the chopper when you have her on your side in mission is part of the “fanservice” in the DNA of the franchise. You only get those moves in case you managed to “have maximized the bond (…), so it’s kind of special.”

For Stefanie Joosten, despite being in talks with Kojima Productions and all the rumors, she has confirmed she won’t be in Death Stranding.
