Details about Disintegration, an upcoming sci-fi shooter from the co-creator of Halo, has slowly been leaking out. During Gamescom 2019’s Opening Night Live show, we had our first look at brand-new gameplay from the anticipated game.

Most of what we already knew about the game came from a recent article in Edge Magazine (as reported by VGC). The game’s single-player campaign spans 10-12 hours and features an extensive multiplayer mode. According to Marcus Lehto, who heads Disintegration’s developer, V1 Interactive, the game foregoes the usual types of gear and stat progression that define most multiplayer shooters. Instead, developers focused on making every match as enjoyable as possible, full of daring maneuvers, or as he puts it, it’s “built on hero moments.”

A gameplay trailer shown during Gamescom 2019 displayed more on what to expect regarding the game’s final build. In the trailer, we see gameplay from the perspective of a mech pilot both commanding troops on the field and controlling a massive metal war machine to rain death from above. According to Lehto, the game combines first-person shooter gameplay with a real-time strategy mechanic for a unique multiplayer experience. All players control a mech and issue commands to their AI-controlled soldiers during matches.

So far, the developers have announced a capture-the-flag style multiplayer mode called Retrieval, but it’s not clear whether other modes are coming before the game releases. It’s far too early to tell how it will play out when a group of players jumps into the fray together. During the trailer, it looks gorgeous, frantic, and fun.

The trailer also offered a better look at the game’s art style, which looks to take cues from both Destiny and Titanfall for the design of its mechs and its characters.

Disintegration doesn’t have a solid release date set yet, but it’s due out sometime in 2020. It will be available on PS4, Xbox One and PC at launch.
