The Angry Birds The Movie 2 is now the top-rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes.

Usually we wouldn’t cover news concerning The Angry Birds The Movie; however, we made the exception for its sequel because of the huge milestone it hit.

A few months ago, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu was hailed as the best film based on a video game. Fans, for the most part, really enjoyed Detective Pikachu. Critics were more mix on the movie, criticizing the lack of originality of the plot and how little it tries to appeal to viewers who are not into Pokémon. Despite that, the film sits at a comfortable 68 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Rotten Tomatoes is a website that gathers all the reviews for film and TV and calculates a percentage for each movie determining how much of the reviews are positive. Generally, video game based movies are often given terrible ratings on the website. While 68 percent may not seem impressive, it is still considered a fresh rating, which means the general reception is favorable.

At 68 percent, Detective Pikachu was the highest-rated video game based movie on the website. At least that’s how it was until very recently.

There wasn’t a lot of expectation for the sequel to The Angry Birds The Movie. The first movie sits on a rotten score of 44 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Though many defend the first film as an adequate family film, it never became as universally beloved as other families movies.

But then The Angry Birds The Movie 2 was release this month and was given mostly positive reviews. Audiences and critics are praising the film’s humor, with most claiming it to be a big step up compared to its predecessor.

The Angry Birds The Movie 2 sits at a solid 76 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, officially outranking Detective Pikachu as the number 1 rated video game based movie on Rotten Tomatoes. Yes, you heard that right. Pokémon lost to a movie based on a mobile game about flightless birds.

Now in fairness, The Angry Birds The Movie 2 currently only has 79 reviews counted on Rotten Tomatoes. Detective Pikachu was also at one point at the 70 percent rating, before dropping to its current 66 percent. It’s possible that The Angry Birds The Movie 2 will also drop once more reviews are collected.
