Mike Ybarra Departs Microsoft and Xbox Division After 20 Years

Mike Ybarra Departs Microsoft

It seems that a lot of video game industry veterans are leaving their posts as of late. Reggie Fils-Aime retired from Nintendo of America some time ago after pushing them to success; Shawn Layden made a surprising departure from Sony’s Worldwide Studios just last week. Now, Mike Ybarra is the latest to move on to a new role.

The former Vice President of Microsoft’s Xbox division announced his departure on Twitter with a pair of posts.

“After 20 years at Microsoft, it’s time for my next adventure,” he proclaimed. “It’s been a great ride at Xbox, and the future is bright. Thanks to everyone at Team Xbox, I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished and I wish you the best. More soon on what’s next for me (super excited)!”

His follow-up tweet reads, “Most importantly, I want to thank all of you fellow gamers, and our great fans, for all the support. Keep gaming and I hope to see you online soon!”

It sounds like the departure from the company is amicable. It's far different from how Layden departed Sony without even so much as a goodbye.

Ybarra did add in a follow-up response to a fan, “Thanks, I’m not done giving every ounce of energy I have to try and make gaming better for everyone. Soon…!” While it’s too soon to tell if this is a hint on where he’s going next, it’d be interesting to see what comes up.

Wherever he ends up, we wish Mike the best of luck! Here’s hoping we hear what he’s got planned next soon.
