Age of Empires fans have been waiting 12 years for a fourth release in the iconic real-time strategy series. Now, over a decade later, Microsoft is finally listening to their pleas. Age of Empires 4 is on its way.
Microsoft announced the new Age of Empires release during a livestream at gamescom. Relic Entertainment, the developers behind Company of Heroes and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, is at the helm for developing Age of Empires 4. The game’s launch trailer shows a range of battles across historical ages, from Classical Greece to the Renaissance to American colonialism. Romans, Native Americans, British soldiers, and Japanese samurai feature within the trailer, but little else is known about the game so far.
“Relic Entertainment has a wealth of experience in creating high-quality RTS games, making them the ideal partner to develop Age of Empires 4,” Microsoft creative director Adam Isgreen wrote in an Xbox blog post. “We are thrilled to be working with them and can’t wait for fans to see their unique and exciting contribution to the Age of Empires franchise.”
Relic Entertainment also published an announcement, teasing that more info is on the way “in the months to come.”
“We can’t wait to tap into our strengths as a studio to fuse historical context with deep strategic gameplay, and to bring this franchise back to the forefront of gaming and into the hands of its beloved community,” Relic Entertainment said in their post.
Age of Empires 4 is currently slated for a PC release. A release date has not yet been announced, and it remains unclear if other platforms will receive a port.
