Watch out, Nazis. One Congressional candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives is killing fascists in Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus to support her political campaign. Game developer Brianna Wu plans to raise funds for Congress by playing the recently released FPS on Twitch.
Wu announced her plans in a press release on Monday. She gravitated toward Wolfenstein after one of its slogans, “Make America Nazi-free Again,” parodied President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan and subsequently upset the American far-right.
Wu, who was previously targeted by GamerGate and the right-wing publication Breitbart, argues bigotry runs rampant in the U.S. thanks in part to the Republican party’s right-wing political values. But instead of raising funds through more traditional means, Wu is embracing Wolfenstein’s Nazi-killing gameplay as an opportunity to both celebrate its anti-fascist message and “speak about her plans to grow the U.S. economy.”
“One of the reasons Millennials feel disenfranchised is politicians don’t speak to them in ways that feel genuine,” Wu said in the press release. “Twitch is one of the most important ways to engage younger people. I plan to go to voters where they are, not asking them to come to me.”
Wu originally planned to stream Wolfenstein 2 on Monday at 5pm ET. However, she’s since pushed off the Twitch campaign, citing ongoing harassment that happened within the Twitch channel during the stream’s first hour. She blames both GamerGate and white supremacists entering the channel.
“Heads up: Our Twitch playthrough of #Wolfenstein was hijacked by white supremacists for most of the broadcast yesterday,” Wu wrote on Twitter. “We are going to be adding moderators, will give it another go very soon. I still believe Twitch can be a viable campaign platform.”
Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus was released late last month on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The game’s Nintendo Switch release is expected for 2018.
