Diablo 3 is bringing back the Darkening of Tristram event

Last year, Blizzard celebrated the 20th anniversary of Diablo, and early this year, in January, the Darkening of Tristram event was held in-game. It was a recreation of the original Diablo’s dungeon, completely remade in Diablo 3 with retro animations and graphics and it looked just like the real thing. It was truly something to behold, and now it’s coming back.

Beginning at midnight on Jan. 1, players can head back to the dungeon for a repeat of last year’s event. It’s all coming back, in “glorious RetroVision™,” as Blizzard calls it, and you can check it out in-game as well as earn some new “unique transmogrification effects, portraits, achievements, pets, and more” for your trouble. It’s a huge burst of nostalgia that Diablo fans should find comfortable and familiar, and the chance to pick up freebies is always a good reason to participate.

The event will run all the way through Jan. 30, so you have plenty of time to pick up the original Diablo and Diablo 2 to play through them for a chance compare the event and the original game. You may be surprised to see how much you’ve forgotten about the first game. It’s definitely worth going back to, especially if you never got a chance to finish them. Diablo 3 is good, but it’s got nothing on the original games.
