Last month, GameStop unveiled a new program called “PowerPass,” which lets users rent pre-owned games for free in exchange for a biannual $60 subscription fee. And after every six months, subscribers could pick a free pre-owned game to take back home. It’s a sweet deal. In fact, it might’ve been a little too sweet, because GameStop just paused PowerPass for the time being.
After PowerPass officially began earlier this week, GameStop froze the program, telling all stores to take down PowerPass advertisements and store them for the time being. When Kotaku reached out to GameStop about the suspension, the company said “program limitations” were largely to blame.
“We have elected to temporarily pause the roll out of the new PowerPass subscription service, based on a few program limitations we have identified,” a spokesperson said to Kotaku. “We feel this is the right thing to do for now to ensure we are able to provide our guests an exception service.”
GameStop employees suggested that the company’s old in-store computers might have caused the problem, according to Kotaku. The PowerPass program was just way too advanced for them to handle, giving retail employees serious issues. So while PowerPass has been “paused” for the time being, it’s most likely going to come back down the road.
Don’t worry if you’ve already bought a PowerPass subscription, though. GameStop is offering a full refund and letting players pick out one pre-owned game for free, which sounds like a pretty solid way to apologize.
Originally, GameStop planned to launch the PowerPass subscription on Nov. 19, right in time for the holiday season. The program is only open to PowerUp Rewards members, so you’ll have to sign up with the company first when the program eventually comes back.
